Art exhibit honors late photographer

Astoria Art Loft.
Art Loft features local youth
ASTORIA — The Knappa Art, Acrylic
and Photography 4-H Group will host an
artist reception for its initial exhibition
from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Astoria Art
Loft, 106 3rd St.
The exhibit will be available to view
until June 4. Featured artwork was cre-
ated by members of the 4-H group, who
are between ages 9 and 15. On Saturday,
members will be available to discuss their
artwork and their contributions through
4-H.
The group is sponsored by Oregon
State University.
SEAVIEW — The Sou’wester Lodge’s
Art Trail Gallery is featuring work by Dirk
Sweringen until July 18. The art is view-
able from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at the gal-
lery, 3728 J. Place.
The gallery is free to visit. Visitors are
expected to wear face coverings and fol-
low social distancing guidelines.
Sweringen’s photography will be fea-
tured. During his career, he helped found
the Axiom Centre for the Arts in England.
He directed a photography program and
regularly showcased emerging and estab-
lished British photographers.
Sweringen, who was born in Washing-
ton state, returned in the late 1980s while
researching his family history. Many of his
photographs relate to his research.
His family settled in Seaview in 1996.
He took over running his parents’ business
and opened the English Nursery. He was
involved in many activities, including act-
ing as a board member for the Columbia
Pacifi c Heritage Museum and helping run
the Music in the Gardens annual event.
Sweringen died in January. Memo-
rial donations can be made to Columbia
Pacifi c Heritage Museum.
