B5 THE ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2021 Market at Pier 39 begins Sunday The Astorian The Hanthorn Cannery Market at Pier 39 begins Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and features local photography by Astoria Photografpix, art featuring historic homes and buildings by Ronni Harris, roasted nuts by Nutz-R-Us and driftwood art by Oceean Gevonden (Dutch for Uncovered Ocean). New vendors are welcome through- out the season to complement the other businesses in place at Pier 39. “We’re looking forward to bringing more activity to this historic place,” said Peter Marsh, director of the Hanthorn Cannery Foundation. The market will operate indoors every Sunday through September. The Hanthorn Cannery Market is a new ven- ture of Hanthorn Cannery Foundation to raise money and awareness about its eff orts to preserve the history of the fi sh- ing and canning industry on the lower Columbia River. Among the activities at Pier 39 is the Hanthorn Cannery Museum where vis- itors can learn about the history of the former Bumble Bee Seafoods cannery while locals enjoy a stroll down mem- ory lane. The museum also sells an assortment of souvenir items, with pro- ceeds benefi ting the Hanthorn Cannery Foundation. COMMUNITY BRIEFS Kautz receives Silver Beaver award WARRENTON — Local youth men- tor David Kautz, of the Shipwreck Dis- trict of the Cascade Pacifi c Council, Boy Scouts of America, was presented the Sil- ver Beaver volunteerism award on April 22 at a virtual ceremony. This is the top award that a local Boy Scout council can bestow upon a volunteer mentor. After several years of David Kautz serving as the assistant district advisor, Kautz took on his role as chapter advisor. He is also the assistant chairman in charge of the district Pinewood Derby and recruits adult leaders for Pack 540 and Troop 642. Kautz obtained material to repair damages to Camp Royce-Finel, includ- ing vandalism, storm damage and coastal rot. In addition, he helped build a 150- foot raised walkway through the swamp after storm damage cut off part of the main trail access. A retired U.S. Coast Guard chief, he is active in the Seaside American Legion, and has helped with the Seaside Middle School and Seaside High School wres- tling teams, running concessions and doing team statistics. Kautz has also been involved with the Warrenton and Seaside fi re department food drives. He takes pride in serving his community and scouting. Day of Caring a success On April 17, 146 volunteers brought their families, friends and co-workers to three Clatsop County sites to clean up, plant and rebuild at parks and nonprofi ts during the 2021 Day of Caring, hosted by United Way of Clatsop County. Donated supplies and funds made it possible to pick up storm debris, clean cabins, pressure wash structures, weed, plant, rebuild garden beds and install Americans with Disabilities Act pav- ers. The volunteers worked at three locations: Railroad Community Gar- dens in Seaside, Camp Kiwanilong in Warrenton and Hilltop Apartments in Astoria. People also donated over 16 large boxes of essential items for nonprofi t clients, including food, baby sup- plies, personal care items and new clothing, collected at the volunteer sites as well as the Barbey Maritime Center at the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
