High school sports on tap
By GARY HENLEY
The Astorian
The games are on for both players and fans.
T he Oregon School Activities Associa-
tion is moving into its “Season 3” phase of the
school year, featuring spring sports.
Baseball games, softball games, golf meets
and track meets begin starting next week, with
action running into mid-May for all sports.
Local baseball teams for Astoria, Seaside,
Warrenton and Knappa have scheduled open-
ing days on Tuesday, weather permitting.
The fi rst pitch for the Astoria and Seaside
baseball teams will come Tuesday, when the
Fishermen and Gulls open the season with a
Clatsop Clash at Broadway Field.
The two teams will then play a mostly Cow-
apa League schedule that lasts through May 13.
Warrenton opens a three-game series with
Willamina on Tuesday at Willamina, followed
by a home doubleheader with the Bulldogs on
Friday. Knappa has a single game Tuesday at
Gaston, followed by a twin bill three days later
at Gaston.
To keep in-person attendance numbers
down, high school track teams and golf teams
have scheduled a series of dual meets.
Local teams to watch
Astoria and Knappa baseball, as well as the
Warrenton Warriors, whose last offi cial game
was the 2019 class 3A state championship
game in Keizer.
Astoria and Knappa softball will be league
favorites on the diamond. O n the links, Seaside
boys golf will challenge for the 4A state title,
should there be a state championship event.
In track, look for Astoria’s Colton McMas-
ter and Triston Scott of Warrenton to set school
records in the throwing events for their respec-
tive teams.
Across the river in Washington state,
Naselle baseball is always a state contender.
Ilwaco softball should be a new state power,
led by eighth grader Maddie Wilkin in her
fi rst year as a starting pitcher for the Lady
Fishermen.
