Coast Community Radio
Graham Nystrom, Coast Community
Radio station manager, has been guiding
the organization’s radio stations through
the pandemic. For KMUN 91.9 FM, the
impacts of the pandemic have been largely
felt through the loss of interactions between
staff and volunteers, Nystrom said.
The station usually has over 100 vol-
unteers regularly coming in and out of the
building, plus a variety of special in-studio
guests.
“The staff and I both dearly miss our
usual rotating cast of characters,” Nystrom
said.
Now, KMUN’s volunteers are creating
shows from their homes, using recording
equipment either purchased themselves or
provided by the station.
“We call it our ‘Homegrown Radio.’ And
while it’s not quite as good as live radio,
it’s the very next best thing,” Nystrom said.
“We are very fortunate to not have been as
negatively impacted fi nancially as many
other businesses. We were able to continue
to provide our service, and our members
have been graciously and generously con-
tinuing to support us.”
KMUN has also been producing recorded
video performances of musicals guests and
uploading them to YouTube, Nystrom said.

Gates block the entrance to the Liberty
Theatre on March 15, 2020.
“Lots more great on-demand perfor-
mances coming your way throughout the
year,” Nystrom said.
Nystrom is looking forward to KMUN’s
partnership with the Liberty Theatre. The
two organizations will produce a classical
music series together.
“Our audience has a strong contingency
of classical music lovers,” he said.
The fi rst performance, which features
members of the 45th Parallel Universe
Orchestra, released Monday, coinciding
with the station’s spring pledge drive.
