Walking through Warr enton Airport Dike Trail is enjoyable year-round BY LINDA K. HOARD James Cook and his brother’s dog, “Trask,” begin their walk along the Airport Dike Trail on a cold, sunny day. While Trask enjoys a run, Cook enjoys seeing the Astoria Regional Airport. “It’s fun to see the Coast Guard helicop- ter come and go,” Cook said. Down the trail, Joe and Lizzy, fi rst-time trail visitors, explore the area with their dog, “Millie.” The couple enjoy watching waterfowl while avoiding some of the mud- dier local hikes. The fl at, wide, grassy Airport Dike Trail in Warrenton is frequented by hikers, dog walkers, birdwatchers, cyclists and aircraft enthusiasts. The trail, which is part of the larger War- renton Waterfront Trail System, is located just off U.S. Highway 101, with a small parking lot near the west end of the Lewis and Clark River Bridge. A large sign dis- play with detailed history of the Old Youngs Bay Bridge is near the parking area. See Page 9 Photos by Carolyn Hoard TOP: The Airport Dike Trail.
