A5 THE ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2021 SPORTS OBITUARIES Carol Diane Arthur Seaside football team looks to return to championship form Warrenton April 6, 1943 — Feb. 14, 2021 By GARY HENLEY The Astorian It was a tough start, but a pretty good fi n- ish for Seaside football in 2019. Aaron Tanabe’s fi rst year as the Gulls’ coach seems like ages ago as the athletic director and head coach enters his second season after the long break. The Gulls’ last appearance on the fi eld ended in a fi rst round state playoff loss at Marist on Nov. 8, 2019. The game capped a 4-2 fi nish for Seaside over the fi nal six games of the 2019 season — a much different look than the start. Seaside began the season with three straight defeats, which included blow- out losses to Marist (35-3) and Gladstone (34-0). The Gulls turned it around from there, winning three straight to open league play, before a 34-6 loss at Banks in the rematch of the 2018 state championship game. Tanabe’s team goals this spring are sim- ilar to how things played out in the fall of 2019: “Get better at something every day,” said Tanabe, the Cowapa League’s co-Coach of the Year last season. Seaside’s strength in 2021, he adds, is “commitment. We’ve had 30 to 35 kids at our workouts since June. I couldn’t be prouder of our kids’ commitment level these past eight months, even with our season being far from a sure thing. We’re ready to go.” League predictions will be tough, given all the variables. The only known part is that the Cowapa League is always tough. After winning the 2018 state title, Banks returned to the championship game as the No. 1 seed in 2019, but lost a 21-0 decision to La Grande. “Tough games week in and week out,” Tanabe said of the Cowapa. “We’re looking forward to the fi ve opportunities we have to measure ourselves against someone else.” And given their strengths and improve- ments made, Seaside will be right there, once again challenging for the top spot in the Cowapa. The players Defensively, the Gulls had three fi rst team all-league linebackers in 2019, two of whom return, junior Andrew Teubner and junior Lawson Talamantez. Also one of the top running backs in the league, Teubner could be on the fi eld 48 minutes every Friday night. “We expect Andrew to be one of our pri- mary ball-carriers once again this season,” Tanabe said. “On defense he’s a great tack- Gary Henley/The Astorian Aedyn Cook could be all-league on both sides of the ball this spring. On the other side of the ball, we expect him to be one of the best defensive players in the league for the next two years.” Senior Jeremiah “J.J.” Stanley “started at guard for us (in 2019) but will move to cen- ter this year. We also expect him to start at defensive tackle.” Running the show on offense will be junior quarterback Carson Kawasoe. “Carson’s skills were evident the moment he stepped on campus,” Tanabe said. “Now as a junior, the physical side has caught up. We’re very excited about his future.” Seaside Aug. 30, 1941 — Feb. 17, 2021 Rev. CLATSOP POWER Utti, Rzewnicki near postseason action The Astorian Two former Seaside Seagulls were in the college sports news over the past week. Fresno State women’s basketball senior Maddi Utti helped lead the Bulldogs to their 14th overall win Sunday, an 82-61 victory at San Diego State. Utti scored 19 points and grabbed seven rounds with four assists and three steals, the fourth time in the last six games with at least four assists, and her most points since scoring 20 on Jan. 23 vs. Boise State. Fresno State was coming off a 79-77 loss at San Diego State just one day earlier. After an 11-0 run by the Aztecs into the second quarter, the Bulldogs answered with a 15-2 stretch sparked by seven points from Utti. “Maddi really helped out tonight,” said Fresno State coach Jaime White. “I thought she was very aggressive offensively. I thought our press was better. We forced (the Aztecs) into 15 turnovers. Good team win and good second night.” Fresno State hosts the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in its last regular season series, beginning Thursday. Game 1 tips off at 6 p.m. and will stream live on the Moun- tain West Network. Running Rzewnicki Former Seaside athlete Bradley Rze- wnicki was running again last weekend, com- peting for the University of Arizona men’s cross-country team at the Dave Murray Invi- tational at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tus- con, Arizona. It was the team’s last regular season meet of the spring season, before the Wildcats take part in the Pac-12 championships March 5. Rzewnicki ran the 8,000 meters in 25 minutes, 48.7 seconds to fi nish 16th out of 36 runners, and was the third runner for Ari- zona, which fi nished third in the team stand- ings behind UCLA and California. After graduating from Seaside High School, Rzewnicki spent three years run- ning track and cross country at Gonzaga University. Listed as a junior with the Gonzaga indoor track team in early 2020, Rzewnicki is listed as a freshman on the Arizona cross-country roster.
