Astoria receives awards for
downtown revitalization

The signed beam carried an American fl ag and an
evergreen tree to bring good luck to the project.
An Astoria business and project were among Oregon
Main Street’s 2020 Excellence in Downtown Revital-
ization award winners announced Monday.
Blaylock’s Whiskey Bar won the Best New Business
of the Year award. Astoria Downtown Historic District
Association’s glass tile grant received the Best Historic
Preservation Project award.
The downtown association works with a local arti-
san to restore and preserve the sidewalk prisms installed
nearly 100 years ago to let sunlight into below-grade
spaces.
During the pandemic, Blaylock’s Whiskey Bar part-
nered with six local food carts and chefs to provide pre-
mixed cocktail servings and food to-go.

911 operators graduate from
telecommunications class
Two Astoria 911 dispatchers graduated Friday from
the basic telecommunications class.
A graduation ceremony was held for Bobbie Andring
and Jesse Kirkendall at the Oregon Public Safety Acad-
emy in Salem.
The ceremony was closed to the public because of
the coronavirus pandemic.
Two offers pending on former
Gearhart Elementary School
GEARHART — Two buyers seek ownership of the
former Gearhart Elementary School property.
The potential sale comes after the school closed this
year and the campus moved to the new Pacifi c Ridge
Elementary School in Seaside, outside of the tsunami
inundation zone.
The competing buyers are Jeff Bodner, a general
contractor, and Celeste Bodner, founder and executive
director of Foster Club, and Robert Morey and his wife,
Timi.
Offi ces close for Veterans Day
In observance of Veterans Day on Wednesday, all fed-
eral, state, county and city offi ces and services, includ-
ing Astoria, Warrenton, Gearhart, Seaside and Cannon
Beach city halls, are closed. All U.S. post offi ces are
closed, and there is no mail delivery.
Astoria, Jewell, Knappa, Warrenton/Hammond, and
Seaside (including Cannon Beach and Gearhart) school
district schools, and Clatsop Community College, are
closed. Lil’ Sprouts is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Public libraries in Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton are
closed.
The Port of Astoria offi ces and services are closed.
Garbage collection through Recology Western Ore-
gon and Warrenton garbage collection are not affected
by the holiday. Recology Western Oregon’s transfer sta-
tion is open.
The Sunset Pool in Seaside is closed. The Astoria
Aquatic Center is closed.
The Clatsop County Heritage Museum, Oregon
Film Museum and the Flavel Carriage House are open
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the Flavel House is open from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Uppertown Firefi ghters’ Museum
is closed.
Fort Clatsop is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Colum-
bia River Maritime Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to
5 p.m. The Seaside Museum is closed.
Sunset Empire Transportation (“The Bus”) is
running.

Two people from Ilwaco killed
in crash south of Warrenton

Two people from Ilwaco,
Washington, were killed
Wednesday in a crash on
U.S. Highway 101 south of
Warrenton.
Patricia Ann Shine, 71,
Randall Jack Shine, 63, and a
dog traveling with them were
killed in the crash involving
three vehicles.
Oregon State Police said
Rachael Forrest, 26, of Sea-
side, was heading north-
bound when she crossed
into the southbound lane and
struck a vehicle driven by
Randall Shine.
Shine’s vehicle spun into
the northbound lane and was
struck again by an Oregon
Department of Transporta-
tion vehicle.
A crash south of Warrenton left two people from Ilwaco dead.
The two Oregon Depart-
ment of Transportation
employees in the vehicle
were taken to the hospital.
Forrest, who was unin-
jured, was arrested for driv-
ing under the infl uence of
intoxicants and reckless driv-
ing. The Clatsop County Dis-
trict Attorney’s Offi ce may
fi le additional charges.
The highway closed in
both directions after the crash
and reopened late Wednes-
day afternoon.
Downtown district names new
Astoria Sunday Market manager

The Astoria Downtown
Historic District Associa-
tion has hired a new market-
ing and promotions manager
who will also oversee the
Astoria Sunday Market.
Shelby Meyers, who
recently relocated from
Eugene, will oversee all
aspects of the market, while
working with the downtown
association’s
p romotions
c ommittee on other events
throughout the year.
Earlier this year, t he
downtown
association
announced it would absorb
the Astoria Sunday Market,
which draws thousands of
people from Mother’s Day in
May to the second Sunday in
October. Cyndi Mudge, who
ran the market since 2008,
stepped down after this sea-
son because of health reasons
and to be closer to family in
Washington state.
“I am so excited to dive
into managing the Astoria
Sunday Market and work-
ing with the ADHDA team, ”
Meyers said in a statement.
“The Sunday Market is
such an important and excit-
ing event for Astoria, and I
couldn’t be more honored to
help keep it thriving.”
In Eugene, Meyers earned
her bachelor’s in land-
scape architecture from the
University of Oregon and
co-founded the Whiteaker
Community Market, a farm-
ers and craft market that
fi lls a city street and park
with food, art and music.
She is enthusiastic about
local food systems and envi-
sions strengthening the local
food community through the
market.
The downtown associa-
tion plans to bring the mar-
ket back to its full footprint
next season with appropriate
safety and social distancing
measures for the coronavirus.
