An election forum on Tuesday night in Astoria
can be viewed on Facebook Live and through the
websites of The Astorian and Coast Community
Radio.
The forum will feature candidates for state House
District 32 and the Astoria City Council and will
livestream from 7 to 9 p.m.

The forum will also be rebroadcast on the radio on
Wednesday on KMUN 91.9 FM.
The forum is a collaboration between the Amer-
ican Association of University Women Astoria
Branch, Clatsop Community College, The Astorian
and Coast Community Radio.
Kelez drops out of
Astoria City Council race
Heather Kelez has dropped out of the race to
replace Jessamyn Grace West on the Astoria City
Council, leaving three candidates running to repre-
sent the east side of town.
Kelez, a director of support for online beer menu
company DigitalPour who moved to Astoria in
April, said she plans to focus on her training to be a
court-appointed special advocate.
“Once I saw there were other candidates
who are defi nitely more established in the commu-
nity, then I knew it would be a long shot for me,”
she said.
Kelez is the second candidate in the Ward 4
race to drop out. Brook Boden, a special educa-
tion teacher, said a new job offer had taken her time
away.
Three candidates are still running to replace
West in Ward 4, which includes Uppertown,
Alderbrook, Emerald Heights and Tongue Point.
They include Tom Hilton, owner of Hanthorn Crab
Co.; Lisa Morley, head of the Friends of Birch
Field and Park; and Joshua Conklin, an employee at
Costco.
Kelez and Boden will remain on the Nov. 3
ballot.

Long Beach man arrested after fl eeing police

A Long Beach, Washing-
ton, man was arrested Thurs-
day after leading police on a
high-speed chase from War-
renton to Astoria.
Adam Wayne Fisher, 34,
was arrested for two counts
of reckless endangering,
attempting to elude police,
two counts of hit and run,
reckless driving, robbery in
the third degree, theft in the
second degree, theft in the
third degree, criminal mis-
chief in the third degree and
escape in the third degree.
Warrenton p olice were
called to Walmart in Warren-
ton at about 5 p.m. for a theft .
Fisher was reportedly in the
men’s apparel section and
possibly had a razor knife.

shortly after the call, offi cers
Robert Wirt and Madyson
Hanna arrived and found
Fisher speeding away in
a black 2003 Volkswagen
Jetta.
The offi cers pursued the
Jetta northbound on U.S.
Highway 101 toward Asto-
ria at speeds between 50 and
63 mph.

roundabout and stopped all
of the traffi c in the area.
Fisher drove over the left
side of the center island of
the round about, police said,
grazed two vehicles and
drove onto the grass median
that separates the south and
northbound lanes.
Fisher drove across the
median and exited the mov-
ing vehicle to run east, police
said. The vehicle crossed
the northbound lanes and
became centered on a curb.
Wirt and Hanna pur-
sued the driver on foot . Both
offi cers reportedly drew
their guns, but Workman
said Fisher entered black-
berry bushes, stopped and
surrendered.
Wirt reportedly sustained
injuries during the pursuit.

SEASIDE — The Ore-
gon Lodging & Restaurant
Association
announced
Masudur Khan as its new
board chairman Thursday.
Khan helms Seaside
Lodging and owns and
manages 13 hotels and
one restaurant on the Ore-
gon Coast including the
Inn at Seaside, the River
Inn at Seaside, the Coast
River Inn and the recently
debuted
four-story,
65-room Saltline Hotel.
Khan’s wife, Taslema
Sultana, operates The Gil-
bert Inn and the Inn at
Haystack Rock.
“I like challenges,”
Khan said. “We have a lot
of work to do in our indus-
try, but I’m committed and
excited.”
A Seaside hotelier for
more than a decade, Khan
was named the state lodg-
ing association’s 2015
lodging operator of the
year.
Success during the
coronavirus pandemic is
not the same for everyone,
he said.
Hotel or restaurant loca-
tion, size and demographic
are all concerns.
“Every property is
unique, and it’s going to
come back slowly,” Khan
said. “There’s a lot of
uncertainty. We will have
to work harder to survive.
We have lots to do.”
The lodging business is
rapidly evolving, as some
visitors are looking for pri-
vate dining or meeting area
options.

Seaside hotelier Masudur Khan has been named board
chairman of the Oregon Lodging & Restaurant Association.
“Groups are renting
whole floors even though
they might need only 50%
of the space so they can
be safer,” he said. “If you
want to survive, you have
to work around the cus-
tomers’ needs.”
Khan said the Oregon
Coast is seeing visitor rates
much higher than last year,
booking at full price in
both August and Septem-
ber. “It’s very strong. How
long it is going to last, we
do not know,” he said.
A not-for-profit trade
organization, the state
lodging association rep-
resents
approximately
2,600 members, and advo-
cates for more than 10,000
food service locations and
2,000 lodging establish-
ments in Oregon.
Khan said he is looking
forward to his new role.
“My job now is not only
Seaside, of course, but the
whole state,” he said. “As
I am from Seaside, I will
also focus on how I can
help support the commu-
nity and the business own-
ers. I am hoping to make
their voices heard.”
