to host outdoor “Shanghaied”
ASTORIA — Astoria Street Opry Com-
pany will host an outdoor showing of
“Shanghaied in Astoria” at 8 p.m. Friday at
129 W. Bond St.
Attendees will watch portions of last
year’s show on the company’s movie screen
outside its theater. Some live performances
will be held too. Attendees will also be able
to listen to the show from their cars through
their radio stations.
Beer, wine, hot dogs, sausages and pop-
corn will be available to purchase with
cash. Some chairs will be available to sit in
but attendees are encouraged to bring their
own chairs.
Attendees will be expected to follow
social distancing guidelines. The show will
be held weather permitting. If the show gets
canceled, the group will update its Face-
book page.
Hoff man Center Gallery opens new show
MANZANITA — Hoffman Center Gal-
lery will host regional artists for its August
art show, on display from 1 to 5 p.m. Thurs-
day through Sunday at the gallery, 594
Laneda Ave.
Artists Lloyd Lindley, Dorothy Holmes
Mohler and Bev Cordova will be fea-
tured. Clay art by other artists will also be
displayed.
Cordova’s featured pieces will include
“clay vessels.” She came to Oregon as a
young adult and earned her bachelor’s of
fi ne arts degree from Portland State Univer-
sity. Cordova has lived on the North Coast
since retiring from a teaching career.
Holmes Mohler will showcase paint-
ings in her exhibit, “Waiting For a New
Normal.” The collection features paintings
of women with fl owers, which she com-
pleted in winter. Other art included rep-
resents Holmes Mohler’s interpretations
of the coronavirus pandemic, as she’s con-
tinued to paint in recent months. The com-
bination showcases her artistry before and
during the pandemic. Holmes Mohler lives
on the coast.
Lindley will showcase his exhibit,
“The Whole of the Donut.” The collec-

tion explores Lindley’s experiences of the
1970s, plus “the drug-fueled psychedlic car-
tooning of R. Crumb.” Lindley’s paintings
create an alternative reality and explore the
decisions he has made in life. He now lives
in Manzanita.
Clatsop Community College seeks tutors
ASTORIA — Clatsop Community Col-
lege’s volunteer literacy program is seek-
ing tutors to work remotely with students.
Volunteers will work with adult stu-
dents, most of whom are second language
learners. Volunteers are expected to meet
with students once or twice a week for
about an hour.
A coordinator will prepare volunteers to
work with students and provide volunteers
with study materials. Volunteer training is
available.
Volunteers need to have a camera and
microphone.

Angora Hiking Club to visit Puget Island
WESTPORT — Angora Hiking Club
will visit Puget Island from 9 a.m. to noon
on Saturday.
Participants can choose to either walk
or ride a bike. To join, participants should
meet on Marine Drive between Second and
Third streets in Astoria by 9 a.m. There,
participants will sign in. Bike riders will be
able to give their bike to a club leader who
will be driving the bikes to the Wahkiakum
County Ferry.
Attendees will then meet at the ferry
dock in Westport for the 10:15 a.m. ferry.
To ride the ferry, bring $6 per car, $3
per bike or $2 per walk-on. Only cash is
accepted.
Participants should call event coordina-
tor Kathleen Hudson to register by Friday at
503-861-2802. Participants do not need to
be club members.
Attendees will be expected to wear
masks and follow social distancing guide-
lines. Participants should bring snacks,
water and lunches.
