Another great place to hike is the Cathe-
dral Tree Trail, which loops up to the Asto-
ria Column. The hike is fairly easy but is a
steep uphill incline for a good chunk of the
way.
The Astoria Riverwalk is also always a
great place for a walk or bike ride. If you
want to challenge yourself, try heading as
far east or west as possible. If you go west
you can view the Astoria Bridge, Maritime
Memorial Park and other unique sites. If you

It’s no secret that Astoria has a rich
local cinema history. Movies filmed in
town include “Kindergarten Cop,” “The
Goonies,” “Free Willy,” “Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles 3,” “Short Circuit” and a
handful of others.
If you’re interested in seeing some
movie filming locations, start by heading to
Pier 39, then walking about three blocks, to
36th Street. There, you can get a glimpse of
Astor Elementary School, which was used
in “Kindergarten Cop,” plus the house used
in “The Goonies.” Be wary, though — vis-
itors aren’t allowed to walk up to the house
or park near it to get a photo, so stick to the
riverwalk if you want a peek of the house.
Other nearby locations, including the
Astoria Column, Hammond Marina, Asto-
ria Bridge, Flavel House Museum, Youngs
River Falls and Ecola State Park, have
also been featured in many locally-filmed
movies.
