Travel in the footsteps of the Lewis and
Clark Expedition by walking the 6.5-mile
Fort to Sea Trail, built around the begin-
ning of the century for the bicentennial cel-
ebration of the Corps of Discovery.
You can begin the trail from the Sitka
spruce forest near the fort replica in Lewis
and Clark National Historical Park or at the
Sunset Beach State Recreation Site, a 120-
acre park along the Clatsop Plains. From
Sunset Beach — which provides visitors
with vehicle access to the shoreline — you
can see Ecola State Park and Tillamook
Head to the south, and Cape Disappoint-
ment to the north.
While you’re in the Warrenton area,
include a stop at Cullaby Lake County
Park, just south of the city. The entrance fee
is $5 for day-use. With a shallow wading
area on the west shore of the lake, an inter-
pretive trail, picnic areas and a playground,
the lush park is a welcoming respite for
families. The park also offers public access
to a boat launch and docks, and is the site
of the Lindgren Cabin, a Finnish-American
heritage site.

Aft ernoon activity: Go for a hike

Clatsop County is a goldmine of dazzling spots to go hiking. Warrenton is no exception. While
the small town is home to a variety of activities, its hikes are easily accessible and enjoyable.
Fort to Sea Trail, located in Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, lasts about 6.5 miles one
way, and about 13.5 round-trip. The trail is arguably the most diffi cult of Warrenton’s hikes. The trail
features a variety of views, much of which are of a lush forest.
Coff enbury Lake Trail, in Fort Stevens State Park, is an easier hike and lasts about 2.5 miles. The
trail features views of Coff enbury Lake, wildlife and local forestry. A picnic area, campground and
swimming area are also located in the park.
Cullaby Lake Trail, in Carnahan County Park, lasts about 2 miles. The trail is located off Cullaby
Lake, where visitors can swim. A local park nearby is nice for taking children to play or for enjoying
a picnic.
Youngs River Trail is about 2 miles and includes views of the Columbia River, Youngs River, Asto-
ria Bridge and Youngs River Falls. Along the way, you’ll view fi lming spots for movies including
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3” and “Free Willy 2.”
Airport Dike Trail is about 4 miles and is one of the quieter trails to explore. The quiet path off ers
some of Warrenton’s best birdwatching spots, as the trail is located off Youngs Bay. Before heading
out, remember to bring proper equipment like water, snacks, a mask and sunscreen.
