Speaker to refl ect on Oregon’s black pioneers MANZANITA — The Nehalem Valley Historical Society will pres- ent “Black in Oregon 1840-1870” at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The presentation will be part of the society’s monthly speakers series, which is held at the Historic Pine Grove Community House, 225 Laneda Avenue in Manzanita. Admis- sion is $5 per person. “Black in Oregon 1840-1870” is an award-winning exhibit created by the Oregon State Archives. The proj- ect illuminates the courage and resil- ience of black pioneers who immi- grated to Oregon between 1840 and 1870. The event’s speaker will be Layne Sawyer, reference manager for the Oregon State Archives. The society maintains archives and exhibits featuring lower Nehalem Val- ley history. Dinner to raise funds for Nordic heritage park ASTORIA — Tickets are available for the second annual Astoria Nordic Heritage Park capital campaign benefi t dinner. The dinner will be held March 28 at Carruthers, 4126 1198 Commercial St. Event proceeds will help fund the proposed Nordic Heritage Park. The Nordic Heritage Park Committee hopes to open the park by June 2021. The park will celebrate Astoria’s Nordic his- tory. About half a million dollars have been raised by the committee. Another $500,000 is needed to start the park’s construction. The dinner will include fi ve courses. Attendees will have the option of a meat, fi sh or vegetarian main course. Nor- dic-themed cocktails will be available. Attendees are encouraged to wear Nor- dic attire. Tickets cost $150 per person. Tickets are available online at astorianordicpark. org. The production will tell the “lost” story of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s journey to the Pacifi c Northwest.
