Rain Magazine open for submissions for 51st issue A free workshop on pruning will be held in Nehalem on Saturday. Brave the chill for summer fruits NEHALEM —It may be cold outside but for more fruit this summer, experts say this is the perfect time to prune. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday the Lower Nehalem Community Trust will host a free pruning workshop in the Community Gar- den at Alder Creek Farm, 35955 Under- hill Lane, Nehalem, OR. Turn on Under- hill Lane and follow the gravel road to the farm. The workshop will be lead by pro- fessional arborist David Sipp of Ecologic Trees. David brings a wealth of knowledge on the best way to prune young, mature or overgrown fruit trees to maximize their pro- duction. This workshop is open to the pub- lic ages 10 and up. Bring your gloves and your favorite pruner. Tools and gloves will also be available to barrow. The orchard in the Community Garden at Alder Creek Farm has just about every fruit and berry imaginable. LNCT orchard- ists and Community Garden leaders will be on hand demonstrating how to prune blue- berries, current, cane berries and more. Rain welcomes submissions from the public as well as CCC students and area high school students. This year’s theme section will meditate upon the idea of “Broke”. This could include poverty, divorce, political division, jail breaks, horse breaking, breaking free, breaking bad — however the writer or artist inter- prets the concept. All general submissions of art, fi c- tion, poetry and nonfi ction will be also considered. Submit no more than three items total, including poems, photographs, high-quality (at least 300 dpi) digital images of original artwork and prose less than 5,000 words in length. Label your work by its appropriate genre (poetry, fi c- tion, nonfi ction) in a cover letter or on the manuscript. The ability to print color is limited, so artists submitting color images should indicate if the image may appear in black and white.
