Annat pinned all three of her opponents — winning by a fall over Centennial’s Jessica Cornea in 3:55; pinning Noelia Castillo of David Douglas in 1:55; then pinning Century’s Ashley Novoa-Men- dez in just 21 seconds in the championship match. Warrenton senior Isabella Carr won the title at 170, also pinning all three of her opponents. he No. 3-ranked Gulls defeated La Grande twice in less than 24 hours, both on the Tigers’ home fl oor. Seaside’s Ryan Hague scored 24 points in a 60-48 win Dec. 27 , with Brayden Johnson adding 11 points. Johnson led the Gulls in a 62-56 victory Dec. 28 , pouring in 27 points. Lady Loggers outlast Illinois Valley Warrenton wrestlers The Astorian Madelynn Weaver scored 15 points and Sophia Carlson added 12, lifting Knappa past Illinois Valley 49-39 in a fi rst round girls basketball game Thursday of the Toledo Invitational. The Loggers jumped out to a commanding 12-6 lead after one quarter, and held a 15-11 advan- tage at halftime. Illinois Valley had trimmed Knappa’s lead to 29-28 heading into the fourth period, and the Cou- gars tied the game at 35-35 on an offensive rebound score by Megan LeMasters with 4:35 remaining. But from there, the Cougars called it a night defensively, as they gave up numerous uncon- tested shots to the Loggers over the fi nal four minutes. Knappa scored on wide open layups for Katelynn Weaver, Raven Corcoran, Aiko Miller and Madelynn Weaver, whose steal and score gave Knappa a 43-36 lead. Madelynn Weaver and Miller both hit uncontested baseline jumpers in the fi nal minute, and the Loggers scored the easy win, despite losing Hannah Dietrichs and Katelynn Weaver to fouls late in the game. LeMasters led all scorers with 17 points. score big points in holiday tournaments The Astorian Krissy Barendse-Goodman Competing here against Warrenton earlier in the week, Knappa’s Sophia Carlson scored 12 points in Thursday’s win over Illinois Valley. Knappa boys trounce Illinois Valley in Toledo The Astorian The Knappa Loggers picked up the new year right where they left off in the old year, with another dominant win Thursday night in a fi rst round game of the Toledo Invitational. Devin Hoover poured in 26 points in a little over two quarters of action, and the No. 3-ranked Log- gers trounced Illinois Valley, 84-38, in boys basketball action at Toledo High School. The 84 points was a season-high for Knappa, as was the 46-point mar- gin of victory. The Loggers had their eighth straight win locked up just minutes into the game, with Mason Wester- holm’s 3-pointer capping a 12-0 run for a 22-5 lead. Knappa was launching (and mak- ing) 3-pointers at will in the fi rst half, draining six from the 3-point line on its way to a 53-14 halftime advantage. Brandon Gale added two more treys in the third period. Eli Takalo scored 15 points, Westerholm and Logan Morrill fi n- ished with 11 points apiece and Gale had 10 points, to complete Knappa’s fi ve players in double fi gures. Lady Fish hot from fi eld in frozen north The Astorian Playing in another state, some 2,000 miles from home and with single digit temperatures outside, the Astoria Lady Fishermen showed that they’re still good. Astoria posted a 66-39 win over Kotzebue (Alaska) early Thursday morning, on Day One of the Denali Auto Glass/Pepsi Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska. The Lady Fish held a 20-1 lead after one quarter, and were never threatened. In her fi rst game back following an ankle sprain, Astoria’s Brook- lynn Hankwitz scored a game-high 20 points, on 7-of-9 from the fi eld. As a team, Astoria was 23-for- 43 from the fi eld, 3-of-5 from the 3-point line. In other girls basketball tourna- ment action, Cottage Grove defeated Seaside 33-26, and Ridgeview topped Warrenton 42-19, both at the SCTC Holiday Classic at Stayton. Lilli Taylor and Ruby Douglas each had eight points in Seaside’s loss to the Lions. The Warrenton wrestling team was putting in lots of miles last weekend, attending three sepa- rate tournaments Saturday. One group of Warriors took part in the Bob Bishop Invita- tional at Willamina. Another group went to Clatskanie for the Tigers’ Holiday Classic. And the Warrenton girls traveled to Port- land to compete in the Jefferson Invitational. Individually, the Lady War- riors had two champions, two seconds, a third and a fourth place fi nish. Marlie Annat contributed 24 team points with a fi rst place showing at 140 pounds, where Annat pinned three straight oppo- nents — Jessica Cornea of Cen- tennial in 3:55; a 1:55 semifi nal fall against Noelia Castillo of David Douglas; and a 21-second pin over Ashley Novoa-Mendez of Century for the sweep over the big city wrestlers. Warrenton’s other champion was Isabella Carr at 170. Carr took the same route as Annat, pinning three wrestlers from large schools. She won by a fall over Cen- tennial’s Rahma Mohamed (22 seconds); Simone Willingham of Centennial (1:41); and a 2:26 pin over Sydney Carter of Oregon City in the championship. Second place points came from Alejandra Nestor at 100 pounds and Jade Vollner at 190. Divine Godwin took third at 125, and Anna Schenbeck placed fourth at 135. At Willamina’s Bob Bishop Invite, Warrenton’s Sam Irwin continued to romp through the competition with another individ- ual championship at 195. Coming in with a 17-1 record, Irwin wrestled four times, scor- ing pins over wrestlers from Nestucca and Madras, then post- ing a 9-3 decision over Amity’s Russell Brown in the semifi nals, followed by a 7-3 victory against DeAndre Broxterman of Sheri- dan in the title bout. Three Warriors added valu- able points with third place show- ings, including Aricin Rodriguez at 113, Parker Greenawald at 132 and Nic Pior at 145. Armin Rodriguez added a fourth place fi nish at 132, along with fourth place points from Alex Tapia at 160.
