C6 • GRITTY to PRETTY: ASTORIA’S TRANSFORMATIVE DECADE 2010-2019 DECEMBER 31, 2019 PORT OF ASTORIA & COLUMBIA RIVER MARITIME MUSEUM PORT Since 2012, the Port of Astoria has had six directors, with the newest being Will Isom. It turned 100 in 2010. Logging exports also came to the port over this decade. MARITIME MUSEUM The Columbia River Maritime Museum has expanded over the decade with the addition of the Peacock pilot boat in 2010 and the completion of the Barbey Maritime Center in the former Astoria train depot in 2013. A pond for sailboats next to the center is slated to open in 2020. ARTS SCENE The arts scene on the North Coast has stayed steady over the decade, with some noticeable additions like the new black box theater in downtown Astoria, the Astoria Visual Arts and Astoria Makers space in the Van Dusen Building and the Astoria Design Studio in the former YMCA in downtown Astoria. The Astoria Regatta celebrated 125 years in 2019 and the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival turned 50 in 2017. “The Nutcracker” ballet by Little Ballet Theatre turned 45 this December, the North Coast Symphonic Band turned 40 in October and the North Coast Chorale celebrated 30 years as well. Newer events that started at the beginning of this decade like outdoor summer movies at Astoria parks celebrated 10 years this summer.
