KNAPPA POUNDS NESTUCCA, 66-26

he Knappa Loggers cleared one of
their last big hurdles Friday night,
and cleared it with room to spare in a
66-26 win at Nestucca.
Knappa (5-0 atop the league standings)
will look to close out a perfect league season
Friday at home vs. Portland Christian (1-4).
“Nestucca is always a trip we seem to
struggle with,” said Knappa coach Aaron
Barendse. “We started off slow, but shook
the bus ride and put it together. The boys
played hard.”
The Loggers led 22-8 after one quarter,
and 44-14 at halftime.
Eli Takalo had a 5-yard touchdown run,
tossed a TD pass to Kanai Phillip, and the
Loggers recovered a fumble for another
score in the fi rst period.

Astoria rally comes up short
against Valiants
Valley Catholic and Astoria put on a
high-scoring affair Friday night for the fans
in Beaverton where the Valiants ultimately
outscored the Fishermen 32-29 in a Cowapa
League football fi nale.
Astoria rallied from a 32-13 defi cit late
in the game, but could not recover a second
onside kick. The Fish fi nish 0-8 overall, while
Valley Catholic improved to 3-5, and moved
into a three-way tie for third place at 2-3 in the
league standings.
Valley’s Logan Howerton opened the scor-
ing on the Valiants’ fi rst possession, scoring on
a 63-yard run.
After another Valley Catholic touchdown,
Astoria’s Michael Moore plowed in from a
yard out for the fi rst Fishermen score with 1:15
left in the fi rst half.
The Valiants gradually built a big lead,
before Astoria’s Ebin Hillard scored on a
3-yard run midway through the fourth quar-
ter, but Valley’s Trey Eberhart answered with
a 50-yard touchdown sprint on the very next
play, his third TD of the game.
The Fishermen still trailed 32-13 with just
1:17 left in the game, when Ryan Stenblom ran
a quarterback keeper 65 yards for a touchdown.
Anthony Tumbarello’s onside kick was
recovered by Astoria, and three plays later,
Stenblom connected with Tristan Boyle in the
end zone from 30 yards out.
Ryan Stutznegger converted his second
straight two-point conversion, and the Fisher-
men were within three points with 36 seconds
left.
The Valiants, however, recovered the ensu-
ing onside kick to run out the clock.
Warrenton puts the crush
on Gaston, 56-6
Warrenton racked up 444 yards in total
offense, and held Gaston to just 14 in yet
another Northwest League football blowout
win for the Warriors, 56-6. In their four league
victories, Warrenton has scored 63, 66, 41 and
56 points.
The Warriors host Nestucca to fi nish off the
regular season Friday. The Bobcats are coming
off a 66-28 loss to Knappa.
Warrenton ran for 370 yards and passed for
74 in Friday’s game, while holding the Grey-
hounds to just seven rushing yards and seven
passing.
Hordie Bodden Bodden scored three touch-
downs and Devin Jackson had back-to-back
TD runs of seven and 40 yards in the sec-
ond quarter, as Warrenton had another game
wrapped up by halftime, leading 35-0.
Jackson gained 138 yards rushing on just
six carries.

and following a Nestucca score, Knappa’s
Devin Hoover had a 70-yard kick return.
And with just nine seconds left in the
fi rst half, Takalo and Phillip hooked up on
a 90-plus yard touchdown for the 30-point
halftime margin.
After going 1-2 in nonleague play, Knappa
opened league with a 32-23 win at Warren-
ton, followed by blowout victories over Ver-
nonia (42-17), Neah-Kah-Nie (58-38), Gas-
ton (54-0) and Nestucca.
The Royals, ranked 31st out of 34 teams,
are next in line for the eighth-ranked Loggers.
“Nestucca was very physical and ran
hard,” Barendse said. “Those kids got after
it. I couldn’t be prouder of our kids. They
battled and did what they needed to do. One
more league game left for this great group
of young men. Time to prepare for PC and
hopefully keep this rolling.”
