Cannon Beach Library hosts author, former diplomat Stephen Holgate CANNON BEACH — Author, native Oregonian and former American Embassy diplomat Stephen Holgate will discuss his mystery and suspense novels at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 in the Cannon Beach Library. Holgate wrote “Tangier” and “Madagas- car,” based on the characters, conversations and experiences he encountered in both places. His new novel, “Sri Lanka,” will be released in 2020. He served as a diplomat for Ameri- can embassies in France, Madagascar, Morocco, Mexico and Sri Lanka. In addition to his foreign service posts, Holgate spent several years as a congres- sional staffer; headed a committee staff of the Oregon State Senate; managed two electoral campaigns; acted with the national tour of an improvisational theater group; worked as a crew member of a barge on the canals of France; and lived in a tent while working as a gardener in Malibu. “Tangier,” his fi rst novel, gained critical acclaim, and made the Bookreaders 10-best list in the indie mystery/sus- pense category. His second novel, “Madagascar,” received Stephen Holgate a starred review from Publishers Weekly, a nomination from For- ward Reviews as best book of the year in the fi ction category, and another listing from Bookreaders as among the 10 best mystery/suspense novels of the year. In addition to his novels, Holgate has published several short stories, produced a one-man play and written freelance articles. He lives with his wife, Felicia, in Portland. Textile exhibit on display in Cannon Beach CANNON BEACH– A textile exhibit titled “#OMG That’s Fiber?” is on display now through November at the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum. The museum is open Wednesday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is donation based. This is the third time textile group High Fiber Diet has displayed their creations at the museum. The group consists of over 30 quil- ters throughout the region and is part of the Columbia FiberArts guild. College art gallery opens season with group show ASTORIA – The Clatsop Community College Royal Nebeker Art Gallery has kicked off its season with a three-person show titled “Three Artists: Three Journeys.” The artists include Tom Jensen and Beth Kehoe from Washington and Drea Frost from Cannon Beach. The show is on view now through Oct. 24. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends by appointment. A reception for the artists will take place Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. The reception and exhibits are free. Two workshops will be held in conjunc- tion with the show. Jensen and Kehoe will lead “Beth And Tom Argue About Art,” in which the two discuss artistic feedback on Friday, Oct. 18. Frost will lead “Collage Transforma- tion,” in which participants will paint abstract designs and use them to create nature-inspired collages. This workshop will be held on Thursday, Oct. 21. Both workshops will take place in Room 101 of the CCC Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Workshops are free to CCC stu- dents enrolled in fall term art classes and open to the public for $25.
