A5 THE ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2019 SPORTS Astoria rallies, falls short at Stayton The Astorian Astoria called up a little “Comeback Magic” from last year, but came up just a little short Friday night at Stayton. Stayton jumped out to a 20-6 halftime lead, increased it to 27-6, then held on for a 27-19 win over the Fishermen in Class 4A nonleague foot- ball action. The Fishermen were fac- ing the same Stayton team that held a 19-0 lead at CMH Field last year, only to watch Astoria rally for a 22-19 win. Stayton’s quick strike offense led to two touch- downs in the fi rst half of Fri- day’s game. After forcing the Fish- ermen to a three-and-out to start the game, the Eagles drove 83 yards in just four plays, capped by a 48-yard pass from Ben Rash to Logan Classen. Astoria countered with a 72-yard pass from Bo Wil- liams to Tristan Boyle late in the fi rst quarter, bringing the Fishermen to within 7-6. An Astoria turnover left the Eagles with a short fi eld early in the second period, with Stayton driving 27 yards in three plays to take a 13-6 lead. The Eagles’ longest scor- ing drive of the fi rst half — six plays — resulted in an 8-yard touchdown run by James Bridge for the 20-6 advantage. The Fishermen had a costly turnover on their drive, as Stayton intercepted a Wil- liams pass in the end zone with 1:07 left in the half. And the Eagles nearly cashed in the turnover for another six points, as a big play for the Stayton offense had the Eagles fi nish the half at Astoria’s 5-yard line as time expired. Stayton tacked on seven more points for a 27-6 lead late in the third quarter before the Fishermen began their comeback. Astoria scored with 11:13 left in the fourth, when Wil- liams scrambled to his left and found a receiver in the back of the end zone from four yards out to make it 27-13. Two plays later, the Fish- ermen forced a turnover and took over at the Eagle 33-yard line. Following an 8-yard pass from Williams to Ryan Stutznegger and a 14-yard scamper by Williams, Stutznegger capped the short drive with an 11-yard TD run, with 9:09 left. But that would be all the scoring, as both teams had two scoreless drives to fi nish the fourth quarter. Astoria’s last drive reached the Stayton 30-yard line, com- ing up one yard short of a fi rst down in the fi nal minute. The Fishermen hit the road again next week for a Friday game at Estacada. PREP ROUNDUP Warrenton scores road win at Creswell Even with 10 penalties and three turnovers, the Warrenton Warriors racked up 468 yards in total offense in a 47-22 win Friday night at Creswell, in a nonleague football game. The Warriors built a 33-0 lead, on their way to a 2-0 record. Jake Morrow had two touchdown runs in the fi rst quarter, and Devin Jackson added a 39-yard scoring run to start the second period, on his way to a 125-yard, three-touch- down night, on just 14 carries. Morrow also completed 7-of-13 passes for 201 yards, with fi ve completions to Aus- tin Little for 110 yards. Toledo beats Knappa Toledo accomplished a 52-point turnaround from their last meeting with the Knappa Loggers. Knappa won last year’s nonleague football meeting with the Boomers, 70-28, and defeated Toledo 52-0 in 2017. The Boomers turned the tide Friday night at Knappa, where Toledo posted a 22-12 win over the Loggers. Astoria blanks Marshfi eld, 5-0 Marshfi eld and Astoria met in Newport for a nonleague girls soccer game Saturday afternoon. And the neutral site worked out better for the Lady Fish- ermen, who battled through a tough fi rst half to score a 5-0 win over the Pirates. Astoria still held a 1-0 lead at halftime, thanks to a penalty kick conversion from Haley Kelley in the 19th minute. Astoria’s Elle Espelien added two goals in the second half, with a fourth from Abi Albright. Late in the game, Espelien crossed a pass to Albright, who brought the ball back across the goal for Taileigh Cole, who scored the fi fth goal. Astoria’s back line stayed aggressive throughout the entire game, with Maddie Sis- ley and Brooklyn Zerangue as center backs. The Marshfi eld keeper had 12 saves for the day. The Fishermen play at another neutral site Tuesday, facing Elmira at Wilsonville High School. Marshfi eld rallies to top Astoria Astoria took a 1-0 lead, but Marshfi eld rallied by scoring fi ve unanswered goals for a 5-1 win over the Fishermen in a nonleague boys soccer game Saturday in Newport. The Fishermen jumped in front on a free kick in the fi rst half, when Marco Franco Houser sent the ball to Shrey Sharma, who headed the ball over the top of the Marshfi eld keeper into the net. A tired Astoria team couldn’t keep pace with the Pirates in the second half, as the Fishermen were missing Javier Campos Bermudez, Leo Mat- thews and Michael Postlewait. — The Astorian 9/20/19 9/20/19 9/20/19 9/20/19 9/20/19 The Lower Columbia Hospice Advisory Commitee would like to thank our sponsors, volunteers and participants who made the seventh annual “Race to the Bar” wildly successful and astoundingly fun!
