Projecting Seahawks’ 53-man roster

I
f a few unexpectedly
good performances made
projecting the Seahawks’
53-man roster that much
tougher after the fi rst week
of preseason, injuries and a
few staggers at Minnesota
added to the challenge fol-
lowing the second preseason
game.
But projecting is what we
do here.
So here’s our best guess
at putting it all together after
Sunday’s 25-19 loss to the
Vikings.
Quarterbacks
Keep: Russell Wilson,
Geno Smith.
Cut: Paxton Lynch, J.T.
Barrett
Comment: Lynch didn’t
have a ton of help against
the Vikings, but also missed
a few things that were
there, and this didn’t feel
like the big taking-advan-
tage-of-an-opportunity that
it could have been. I had the
team keeping Smith after
last week, anyway, since one
week seemed like too little
to make a change just yet.
Smith didn’t play against the
Vikings, but it sounds like
he’ll be back for the Char-
gers. This week could allow
him to solidify the job — or
leave it that much more open
for the fi nal week of the pre-
season, when Lynch and
Smith will probably get all
the snaps. Barrett isn’t a fac-
tor yet.
Running backs
Keep: Chris Carson,
Rashaad Penny, Bo Scar-
brough, Nick Bellore, Travis
Homer.
Cut: C.J. Prosise, J.D.
McKissic, Xavier Turner.
Comment: I’m adding
Homer this week after he
got healthy and showed a
few things late in the game
against the Vikings. For now,
he may be the leader in the
race for the third-down/
two-minute back spot with
the inability of Prosise and
McKissic to get healthy.
Scarbrough didn’t play
against the Vikings. But he
was off to a nice start early
in the Denver game and for
now, I’m keeping him.
Receivers
Keep: Tyler Lockett,
DK Metcalf, Gary Jennings,
David Moore, Jaron Brown.
Cut: Jazz Ferguson,
Amara Darboh, John Ursua,

named preseason
All-Americans
EUGENE — For the sec-
ond time in as many days,
Oregon’s top two offensive
linemen earned preseason
All-American honors.
Ducks left guard Shane
Lemieux was named a pre-
season fi rst team All-Amer-
ican by the Associated Press
on Tuesday, and right guard/
tackle Calvin Throckmorton
was a second team honoree.
Lemieux and Throckmor-
ton were both named fi rst
team preseason All-Ameri-
cans by Pro Football Focus
on Monday.
Stanford offensive line-
man Walker Little and
defensive back Paulson
Adebo were the only other
Pac-12 players named to the
AP’s preseason fi rst team.

Hernandez to
rejoin Mariners
rotation this
weekend
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
— Pitcher Felix Hernandez
will rejoin the Seattle Mar-
iners’ starting rotation this
weekend, according to Man-
ager Scott Servais.
Hernandez has missed
three months with right
shoulder
stiffness.
He
pitched 3-plus innings
Monday night for Triple-A
Tacoma in his fourth rehab
appearance, giving up one
run on four hits and three
walks while striking out
fi ve.
“Command of the fast-
ball, as expected, wasn’t as
pin-point as he would have
liked it, but he felt healthy,”
Servais said. “So he will
slide into our rotation on
Saturday.”
The 33-year-old righty
last pitched for the Mariners
on May 11. In eight starts
this season, Hernandez is
1-4 with a 6.52 ERA.
Hernandez won the AL
Cy Young Award in 2010
and has fi nished among the
top four in Cy Young vot-
ing three other times. He has
had injury setbacks in each
of the last four seasons, win-
ning a combined 26 games
in 77 starts.

fi ve receivers, cutting Fergu-
son this week after what was
somewhat of a struggle of an
outing against the Vikings —
just two receptions on seven
targets, including a drop and
a fumble after one of his two
catches. And I’m also going
with the idea that Ferguson,
Ursua and Wright could all
make it through to the prac-
tice squad. In fact, the rota-
tions Sunday indicated that
if there were to be a sixth
receiver kept it would be
Turner. The one big com-
plication here, suddenly,
is Metcalf’s health. Coach
Pete Carroll said there’s a

The recent 18-hole adult/
junior tournament at the
Peninsula Golf Course was
won by Fred Carter, with a
net score of 57 (gross score,
73).
Noah Remillard and
Richard Vasquez tied for
second at 58, ahead of Gavin
Brown and Terry Hillman
(tied for fourth, 62).
It was the seventh tour-
nament in the summer
series.
Vasquez leads the point
standings with 292, ahead
of Carter (282.5), Ed Hines
(267.5), Gavin Brown
(245), Remillard (239) and
Doug Brown (230.5).
In the most recent Junior
competition, Kaeden Lyster
won with a 36, ahead of Ari
Ecknurdt (38), Josh Young
(41) and Donovan Danials
(45).
