Celebrate Regatta at the Summer Pops concert
ASTORIA – Hear the Columbia River
Symphony and Beacock Music Concert
Band’s Summer Pops concert at 7 p.m. Sat-
urday, Aug. 10, at the Astoria High School
Auditorium, 1001 W Marine Drive. The fam-
ily-friendly concert is free and donations are
accepted.
The concert is part of the Astoria Regatta
festival.
The symphony and concert band will per-
form separately for the first half of the con-
cert then join together as one large ensem-
ble to close out the performance with popular
pop music selections.
The program features selections from
popular Hollywood films, musicals and video
games including classics such as “Avengers,”
“Journey,” “Band of Brothers,” “Baba Yetu,”
“Winds of Poseidon” and more.
This concert marks the sixth time that
identical twin brothers and directors of the
symphony and concert band, Cory and Cary
Pederson, have brought their groups together
to perform.
The Columbia River Symphony is com-
prised equally of adults of all ages from all
over the region and youth from six local mid-
dle and high schools. The symphony is now
in its 12th year.

Beacock Music Concert Band is an
ensemble that is part of the New Horizons
music program which provide entry points to
music-making for adults, many of retirement
age, but open to all adults.
The symphony welcomes new members
and is open to anyone who plays a string or
wind instrument, percussion or piano. The
organization is also interested in acquiring
new board members that would enjoy fur-

Northwest bands
ASTORIA – The Fort
George Brewery and Public
House is hosting a block party
from 4-10 p.m. Saturday and
Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11, with
top folk and rock and roll bands
from the Northwest during
Regatta weekend. There is no
cover and all ages are welcome.
Bands playing Saturday
include The Hackles, Michael
Hurley and Tango Alpha Tango.
On Sunday, The Get Ahead,
Jerry Joseph and Roselit Bone
will perform.
There will be an outdoor
showing of “Kindergarten Cop”
at 9 p.m. Friday.
At 8 p.m. on Sunday Aug. 18
and 25, Michael Shay’s Texas
Express and Cedar Teeth will
play. These concerts are also
free and all ages are welcome to
attend.
Texas Express is a ragtime
and bluegrass band. The band is
now based in the Pacific North-
west and features Michael Shay
on guitar/vocals, Peter “Spud”
Siegel on mandolin/vocals,

cade Foothills in Colton, Ore.
The band blends rough and rus-
tic folk rock with lyrical Amer-
ican roots.
ASTORIA – Celebrate the 125th
Regatta and the 1,000th customer of the
Astoria Underground at The Regatta
1,000/125 Party in the Pit from 8-10 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 10, at The Underground
Pit, 1125 Marine Drive. The event is free
and family-friendly.
Jeff Daly, owner of the Astoria
Underground, will host a town-wide
dance party to wrap up the final day of
the Regatta Festival. Guests can enjoy
free hot dogs, participate in a rain gutter
Regatta race and take photos in the Asto-
ria Clown car.
The event will feature DJ Joey
Altruda, as well as art and video dis-
plays, games, food, prizes and giant
bubbles.
The 1,000th guest will also receive
a prize package from local businesses
including Hotel Elliot, Fort George
Brewery, Carruthers, Workers Historic
Tavern, Blue Collar Collective, The
Rusty Cup and Gimres Shoe Store.
