They’re down to
the fi nal four in all
fl ights of all divisions in the
2019 Oregon Coast Invita-
tional, following Thursday’s
action at the Astoria Golf &
Country Club.
Semifi nals in all divisions
of the 109th annual tour-
nament were scheduled for
Friday.
Two former champions in
the Grand Champions divi-
sion both advanced to the
semifi nals, along with a cou-
ple of new names.
Jon Holzgang — the med-
alist in qualifying over the
weekend — continued his
hot streak with a victory over
Eric Larson in Thursday’s
quarterfi nal action.
Holzgang was scheduled
to face two-time champion
Jay Ross in one Friday semi-
fi nal, while former cham-
pion Anthony Arvidson was
to take on Rex Puterbaugh of
Columbia Edgewater. (The
results will be online Friday
night, and will appear in next
Tuesday’s print edition of the
Astorian.)
Arvidson advanced with
a win Thursday against Ilwa-
co’s Patrick Whealdon, while
Puterbaugh defeated Avery
Keating.
There were no surprising
names in the Women’s fi nal
four.
Friday’s
showdowns
will include Amanda Jacobs
against Gretchen Johnson,
and Lara Tennant facing sis-

Jacobs (defeated Molly
Edmunds) and Johnson
(defeated Kat Magner) are
certainly familiar with each
other.
Just last week, Johnson
outlasted Jacobs, both of
Portland, 2-up in match play
to win the 18th Women’s
Mid-Amateur, held at Arrow-
head Golf Club in Molalla.
On her march to another
semifi nal appearance (and
seeking her 12th OCI title),
Lara Tennant had to defeat
her daughter, Grace Tennant,
in Thursday’s match play.
And now Lara Tennant
was to face sister Cappy
Mack in a Friday semifi nal.
Between them, the two have
won 14 Oregon Coast Invita-
tional championships.
In other quarterfi nal
action Thursday, winners in
the championship fl ight of
the Women’s Seniors divi-
sion included Wendy Storlie
(def. Peggy Wobbrock), Zeta
Rennie (def. Mary Swingle),
defending champion Dotty
Johnson (def. Cathi Barta)
and Mary Jacobs (def. Linette
Weislogel).
Elsewhere, Paul Gulick,
Bret Stevens, Randy Heriot
and Tom Mulfl ur were vic-
torious in the championship
fl ight of the Seniors division.
And the Super Seniors
fi nal four features Gaylord
Davis vs. Michael Terrell,
and Jack Cartwright vs. John
Lewis.
Wednesday’s action
The Grand Champion
and Junior/Senior golfers
returned to the links Wednes-
day, on Day 3 of match play.
And the second round
of match play for the Grand
Champions brought some
big victories for some former
OCI champions, and a few
big losses for others.
Qualifying medalist Jon
Holzgang backed up his No.
1 seed with another win, as
Veteran center Pau Gasol,
39, has agreed to a one-year
deal with the Portland Trail
Blazers.
“Pau is a future Hall of
Famer that brings invalu-
able championship experi-
ence and an elite skill set and
basketball IQ to our roster,”
said Neil Olshey, president
of basketball operations.
Despite his age, Gasol
is an accomplished veteran
with a track record of suc-
cess in the NBA. He won
back-to-back championships
alongside Kobe Bryant with
the Los Angeles Lakers in
2009 and 2010.
As a six-time NBA All-
Star and a four-time All-
NBA selection, Gasol will
bring a veteran presence to
the locker room and could
see minutes at the center
position alongside the Trail
Blazers’ newest addition,
Hassan Whiteside, and blos-
soming young talent Zach
Collins. He also provides an
able body in the frontcourt
as they await the return of
injured starting center Jusuf
Nurkic.
Gasol last played for
the San Antonio Spurs and
Milwaukee Bucks during
the 2018-19 season, but
appeared in just 30 games.
He started the season and
played in nine games for the
Spurs until a stress fracture
in his right foot forced him
to miss the next 26 games.
He was eventually released
by the Spurs in a buyout
agreement, and two days
later signed with the Bucks.

Gasol sustained another
injury, this time to his left
ankle, and was forced to
miss the remainder of the
season after playing just
three games for Milwaukee.
In those 30 games, Gasol
posted averages of 3.9
points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7
assists in roughly 12 minutes
per game.
In a tweet Wednesday
afternoon, Gasol said he is
“ready and happy to join
one of the best teams in the
league.”
