18 // COASTWEEKEND.COM Columbia River Maritime Museum holds underwater robotics summer camp ASTORIA – The Colum- bia River Maritime Museum is holding two Underwater Robotics Summer Camps for incoming 6th — 7th graders that are interested in robot- ics, oceanography, engineer- ing, underwater archaeology, and marine technology. The sessions run July 8-12 and July 22-26 at the Barbey Maritime Center. The camp is $400. Campers will design, construct and test their own ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) from start to fi nish over this week long STEAM focused day camp. Days will be spent con- structing frames, piloting ROVs, building simple cir- cuits and soldering. A limited number of scholarships are available. Register here: bit. ly/2IkQfKe Angora Hiking Club off ers two more June events ASTORIA – On Satur- day, June 22, at 9 a.m. the Angora Hiking Club will meet at 1125 Marine Drive for an Underground Tour of Astoria led by Jeff Daly. At 9 a.m. Saturday, June 29, the club will hike Saddle Moun- tain, located off Highway 26 east of Seaside. The Undeground Tour guides are two locals with a love of Astoria and a passion The Franklin Apartments for sharing the mysteries of its underground tunnels. On this tour they escort you through the tunnels safely while providing entertainment, history, per- sonal accounts, comedy and maybe even some surprises. It will take less than an hour. The tour walks along clear pathways on one level that are easy. Please email the walk leader, Arline LaMear at clif- fandarline@msn.com, by Thursday, June 20, if you plan to attend. Fee for this tour is $15. This diffi cult hiking trail is 4.5 miles heavily traf- fi cked out and back. The trail has been upgraded after the recent rains. You will see beau- tiful wild fl owers and Mt. St. Helens and the Pacifi c Ocean from the top of the mountain. The summit is formed from basalt rock. If you plan to participate, please call Michael Dubb at 503-791-5325 by June 28. This hike is an annual memorial hike for Michael’s mother, Phyllis Dubb, a longtime member of the club. All hikers will meet at the parking lot on the river side of Marine Drive just West of Burger King, between 2nd and 3rd streets. Car pooling will be arranged there. This friendly club wel- comes newcomers. It is not necessary to be a member to join in a hike. Dogs are not allowed, however. For more information, call the hike leader or visit angorahikingclub.org. Repair Café holds monthly event June 26 ASTORIA – Join the fun at the Repair Café Event from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at 1010 Duane Street in Astoria. At the monthly event volunteers work on bicy- cles, toys, clothing, scis- sors, knives, household appliances, garden tools or just something that needs to be glued (no gas engines). The Repair Café is a community of volunteers who repair, sew, sharpen and give expert advice on anything that is bro- ken, torn, dull or in need of repair. Bring in your item for repairs or come in and enjoy watching our vol- unteers put things back together again. Volunteers weigh in your repairable items before we send you to one of our repair peo- ple because a major goal of Repair Café is to keep repairable items out of the local landfi ll.
