Graphic by Les Kanekuni Celebrate Bob Dylan’s 78th birthday at KALA ASTORIA – KALA will celebrate legendary singer Bob Dylan’s 78th birthday at 8:30 p.m. Fri- day and Saturday, May 24-25 at its downtown performance space, 1017 Marine Drive, with trib- utes from eight local and regional artists. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15 and are available in advance at lib- ertyastoria.showare.com. There will be a full bar. This event is for people 21 and older. Performers will sing works from Dylan’s more than 60-year career, span- ning 36 studio albums and more than 400 songs. Local and regional per- formers include Luke Ydstie and Kati Claborn of Astoria-based duo The Hackles, who also sing with Blind Pilot; Adams & Costello; Dylan Clodgo; Birds of a Feather; Echo Returns; Dinah Urell; TATATA and special guests John Moen from the Decemberists and Jon- athan Drews of Eyelids will also perform. Touring since the mid- 80s on what some have called “The Never End- ing Tour,” Dylan recently played his 3,000th show in Austria on April 19. Cascadia Chamber Opera presents ‘I Pagliacci’ in Astoria ASTORIA — “I Pagli- acci,” or, “The Clowns,” an opera by Ruggero Leonca- vallo about love, romance and betrayal, will be per- formed by Cascadia Cham- ber Opera at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the Performing Arts Center, 588 16th St. The play-within-a-play opera will feature soprano Jocelyn Claire Thomas as Nedda, Brennen Guillory as Caino, Stacey Murdock as Tonio, Scott Crandal as Peppe, Zachary Lenox as Silvio and piano accompani- ment by Evan C. Paul. Tickets are $15 and are available at bit.ly/2HnmBn9. The opera runs 1 hour and 20 minutes and is sung in Italian with English supertitles. Thomas is a Port- land-based soprano and has sung with operas around the Northwest. She has also per- formed in the Astoria Music Festival. Guillory has sung with opera companies on both East and West coasts, most recently at the 31st Mahler Festival in Colorado. Murdock sings with Port- land Opera and has appeared in productions through- out the Northwest. He has also sung in the Astoria Music Festival and Portland Summerfest. Crandal has performed with Portland Opera, Ping & Woof Opera and Bravo Northwest. Lenox has performed with the Portland and Eugene operas as well as other companies through- out the Northwest. He has also performed in the Astoria Music Festival. Paul has worked with Portland Opera, Cascadia Chamber Opera and works as a collaborative pianist based in Portland. Cascadia Concert Opera is a non-profit perform- ing arts organization based in Oregon. The organiza- tion is dedicated to engaging communities in the musi- cal storytelling of opera and presents operas featuring the region’s artists in cities across the Northwest.
