CHEHALIS, Wash. —
After strong individual
showings at the District IV
championships last week,
two seniors and a stand-
out sophomore will lead
the way as Ilwaco travels
to the WIAA 2B state track
meet this week.
The team will be espe-
cially well-represented at
Cheney, Wash., in relay
races.
Senior Alex Kaino qual-
ifi ed in the 300-meter hur-
dles, 100 and 200 meters,
and will be part of the Fish-
ermen’s 1,600-meter relay
team. At districts in Cheha-
lis last Friday, he set a per-
sonal record of 39.41 sec-
onds to win the hurdles,
placed third in the 200
(23.31) and fourth in the
100 (11.53).
Like Kaino, fellow
senior Ebby McMullen
will be wearing Ilwaco
colors for the last time
at Cheney. The multi-
ple-sport athlete qualifi ed
in the 100-meter hurdles,
long jump, triple jump, and
will be on the 1,600 relay.
Her second-place fi nish in
the 100 hurdles at district
was timed at 16.44, just
behind the winner in 16.02.
Her long jump was 15 feet,
2 1/4 inches for fourth and
her triple jump 34-4 3/4 for
fi fth. Her relay team was
sixth.
Also on the 1,600 relay
squad will be sophomore
Erika Glenn, who qualifi ed
in the 200, 400 and triple
jump. At district, she was
fourth in the 200 (27.49),
second in the 400 with a
personal record of 1:02.29,
and had a third-place triple
jump of 34-0.
Junior Brandon Kuhn
will run the 400, compete
in triple jump, and run the
1,600 meters. He set a per-
sonal record of 53.01 for
sixth in the 400 and his tri-
ple jump was 40-2, which
placed him fourth.
The Ilwaco 1,600 relay
team was second at dis-
trict. The other boys dis-
tance relay runners will be
Colton McNabb and Parker
Kaech, who is another tri-
ple jumper, placing second
at district with 40-8 1/2.
Tristan Trudell will travel
as an alternate.
Freshman Daniel Quin-
tana qualifi ed in the 800,
placing fourth in 2:04.30,
and the 1,600, where he
was second in 4:36.48.
The girls 400 relay
team, fourth at district, will
feature Tazlina Thomas,
Elle Personius, Abby
Knopski and Tiana Ram-
sey, with alternate junior
Sophia Marsha, who will
compete in javelin, having
thrown 103 feet at district,
placing fourth.
The 800-meter relay
team, seventh at district,
will be Personius, Knop-
ski, Ramsey and Alyssa
Marsh. Carolina Mendez
and Sabrina Lessenden
will travel as alternates.
Joining Glenn and
McMullen on the 1,600
relay team will be Ramsey
and Alyssa Marsh.

meet before state for Naselle
High School athletes.
Home track advantage
paid off at the 1B District
championships last week.
The squad endured windy
rain to send 20 runners and
fi eld event athletes to the
WIAA State Championships
at Cheney, Washington, this
Wednesday through Friday.
Two Comet athletes
led the way with multiple
successes.
Freshman Echo Cenci
won the 100-meter hur-
dles (18.23 seconds), the
200 meters (28.59), the 400
meters (1:05.28) and ran on
the Comets’ winning 800-
meter relay team with Grace
Hunt, Lilian Zimmerman and
Bella Colombo (2.01.76).
Junior Monte Schell
placed fi rst in three events,
the 800 (2.16.72), high jump,
clearing 5 feet, 8 inches, and
1,600-meter relay in 3.52.69
with teammates Corey Greg-
ory, Fa’aoso Tutu’u and
Antonio Nolan.
“Those were some high-
lights for us and big point
getters,” said coach Rob
Baker.
Schell was also second in
the 1,600 behind sophomore
Kolby Glenn, who won in
5:08.99, taking the lead after
an early front runner faded.
Glenn was also fourth in the
800.
The girls relay runners
enjoyed individual success.
Bella Colombo, an eighth-
grader, placed third in the
400, fourth in the 110 hur-
dles and fi fth in the 100.
Hunt was second in the pole
vault behind senior team-
mate Sophie Scrabeck, who
won at 8-0. Hunt placed third
in the 800 and fourth in the
3,200 meters, a race that

notable wins. Senior Ellie
Miller won the discus with
a throw of 100-5, ahead of
her opponent by almost six
inches. Emma Colombo, a
sophomore, was second in
the javelin with 94-4 with
Scrabeck third.

Condon led a Com-
ets’ sweep in the pole vault,
clearing 10-6. Caleb Haataia,
another junior, was second
(9-0) and senior Parker Dal-
ton third (8-0).
Josh Chadwick, a fresh-
man, won the 110 hurdles
in 19.11 and placed fourth
in the high jump. Cooper
Miller, a junior, was fourth in
the discus.
Three senior boys who
have played multiple sports
during their Naselle careers,
put in strong performances.
Jacob Eaton was sec-
ond in the triple jump (36-
10 1/4) and was third in the
high jump, clearing 5-4. Ian
Fontanilla placed third in the
300 hurdles and was fourth
in triple jump. Vince Fauver,
was fourth in the javelin with
32-9 3/4 and sixth in shot put.
