Seaside wins Banks Invitational
The Daily Astorian
Another tournament win for the
Seaside boys golf team Wednes-
day, as the Gulls walked off with
the fi rst-place trophy in the Banks
Invitational, held at Quail Valley
Golf Course.
Seaside shot a 323 team score,
well ahead of Valley Catho-
lic (342), which was followed by
Banks (369), Molalla (370), Asto-
ria (381), North Marion (415) and
Forest Grove (443).
With a 78, Seaside’s Connor
Merrell was medalist with a one-
shot victory over Peter Boileau of
Valley Catholic. Merrell was joined
on the all-tournament team by
teammates Curtis Kunde (third with
an 80), Carson Kawasoe (fourth,
82) and Mason Shamion (sixth,
83). Seaside’s fi fth player, Samson
Sibony, missed the all-tournament
team by a single stroke with an 84.
“Today gave us a good look at
where we stand in our region,” said
Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “Most
of the region was here and we had
fi ve of the top eight golfers. Con-
nor had a great front nine then over-
came two doubles on the back, fi n-
ishing birdie-par to win medalist
honors.”
Merrell has now won two of
Seaside’s last three events.
In addition, Kunde “had a solid
round with nothing worse than a
bogey all day,” Poetsch said. “Car-
son had a more eventful round with
three birdies and an eagle. He also
won both KP’s (closest to the pin)
and made both putts for birdies.”
The Gulls are right back on the
course Thursday, in a tournament at
Emerald Valley.
Astoria was led by Dylan
Altheide-Nielson and Taylor Palm-
berg, who both carded 94s, just
ahead of teammate Connor Long
(95). Josh Olson shot a 98.
Indians sweep Mariners with 1-0 win

SEATTLE — Carlos Carrasco
rebounded from one of his worst
starts with 12 strikeouts, Jake
Bauers hit a solo homer and the
Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle
Mariners 1-0 Wednesday to com-
plete a three-game sweep.
Carrasco (2-2) pitched three-
hit ball over seven innings, dom-
inating as the Indians handed
Seattle its sixth straight loss. The
right-hander struck out the side
three times and only allowed one
baserunner to reach third base.
The Mariners ended their
20-game home run streak, a
record to open a season. Seattle
appeared to make it to 21 games
in the third, when Ryon Healy hit

a line drive down the left fi eld line
that was initially ruled a homer. It
was overturned to a foul ball via
replay, and Healy struck out.
Seattle’s only hits were dou-
bles by Mallex Smith and
Domingo Santana and a single
by Edwin Encarnación. Santana
reached third base with two outs
in the sixth after a wild pitch but
was stranded there as Jay Bruce
struck out for a third time.
Seattle’s Erik Swanson sur-
passed the expectations of man-
ager Scott Servais in his fi rst big
league start. Servais was hope-
ful of getting fi ve innings out of
Swanson (0-1), but the rookie
nearly matched Carrasco.
Swanson allowed two hits over
six innings, struck out fi ve and
didn’t walk a batter. Bauers was
the only Cleveland hitter to solve
Swanson, with a single in the sec-
ond and his second home run of
the season on a 3-2 pitch in the
fi fth.
After an opening day loss to
Knappa, the Warrenton Warriors
have won eight of their last nine,
including fi ve in a row with a 7-3
victory Wednesday afternoon over
Clatskanie at Huddleston Field.
Ranked sixth in the latest Class
3A baseball coaches poll, the War-
riors are 4-0 (8-2 overall) atop the
Coastal Range League standings.
Warrenton pitchers Devin Jack-
son and Dalton Knight “didn’t have
their best stuff today, but I was really
pleased with the way they battled
through,” said Warrior coach Len-
nie Wolfe. “And we played a strong
game defensively.”
Jackson and Knight limited Clats-
kanie to just four hits, while War-
renton had seven hits off four Tiger
pitchers.
The Warriors took advantage of
three straight walks to start the bot-
tom of the fi rst inning to score four
runs, which included a two-run sin-
gle by Jackson.
Jackson struck out fi ve and
walked four in the victory, as War-
renton tunes up for a Friday double-
header against Rainier.
Banks’ big inning
beats Seaside
Hayden Vandehey was a one-
man wrecking crew, and the Banks
Braves took advantage of a sev-
en-run fourth inning to defeat Sea-
side 9-2 in a Cowapa League base-
ball game Wednesday at Banks.
Vandehey was the winning
pitcher, allowing six hits with eight
strikeouts and two walks over four
innings, and helped his cause by driv-
ing in three runs with two doubles.
The Gulls rallied from a 2-1 defi cit
in the fourth, as Justin Morris drew a
one-out walk, Travis Fenton singled
to right, and both advanced on a sac-
rifi ce bunt from Gage McFadden.
Morris scored on an infi eld sin-
gle by Payton Westerholm to tie the
game, 2-2.
But the next seven runs belonged
to the Braves, whose seven-run
fourth inning was highlighted by a
two-run double from Vandehey for
an eventual 9-2 lead.
Pitchers Blake Gobel and Andrew
Nichols fi nished the game for the
Braves, with Gobel striking out
three in two innings. Westerholm
and Duncan Thompson had two hits
apiece for the Gulls, who play Thurs-
day at Astoria.
The
fourth-ranked
Braves
improve to 4-0 in league, with Sea-
side falling to 2-2.
SOFTBALL
Clatskanie slips past
Warrenton, 6-1
The Clatskanie Tigers fi nally
played their league opener, and
backed up their No. 3 ranking in
Class 3A softball with a 6-1 win
Wednesday at Warrenton.
Tiger pitchers Kaity Sizemore
and Shelby Blodgett allowed six hits,
with 12 strikeouts and one walk.
Clatskanie scored one run in each
of the fi rst three innings and added
two in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.
The Warriors scored their lone run
in the bottom of the fourth, as Ken-
zie Ramsey reached on a one-out
single, took second on a wild pitch,
and scored on Ruby Dyer’s base hit
to left.
Eight different players had hits
for the Tigers, while Dyer had two
hits for Warrenton, which falls to
1-2 in league, 4-5 overall. Clatskanie
improves to 9-0 overall.
Warrenton coach Staci Miethe
wasn’t happy with the loss, but “We
kept a good hitting team to six runs,”
she said. “They are averaging close
to 12 runs a game, so keeping them
to six is a success for our defense and
battery.
“We had some awesome defen-
sive moments,” she said. “Lilly
(Thomas) caught a runner stealing.
We turned a 6-4-3 double play. Jade
(Freniere) made some outstanding
digs at fi rst. Avyree (Miethe) played
the ‘hot corner’ with several outs and
only one error, and our outfi eld was
solid and made some catches that
were key.”
Warrenton hosts a doubleheader
Friday with Rainier.
