Get Lit announces 2019 author lineup

— Tolovana Arts Colo-
ny’s eighth annual Get Lit
at the Beach: A Gather-
ing for Readers is pleased
to announce the acclaimed
authors who will partici-
pate this year, from Friday
evening, April 5, until noon
Sunday, April 7.
Authors Terry Brooks,
Pierce Brown, Deb Caletti,
Carol Cassella, Sophia
Shalmiyev and Leni Zumas
will be present to mingle,
sign books and tell stories to
an enthusiastic crowd at the
Surfsand Ballroom in Can-
non Beach.
Brown is the author of
the immensely popular
“Red Rising” series. While
trying to make it as a writer,
he worked as a manager
of social media at a startup
tech company, toiled as a
peon on the Disney lot at
ABC Studios, did his time
as an NBC page and gave
sleep deprivation a new
meaning during his stint as
an aide on a U.S. Senate
campaign.
Caletti is the author of
more than 16 books for
adults and young adults.
She’s been a National Book
Award finalist, a finalist
for the PEN USA award,
and her books have won
the Washington State Book
Award and the Pacific
Northwest Booksellers
Award, among other dis-
tinctions. Her newest YA
novel, “A Heart in a Body
in the World,” earned four-
star reviews and was a New
York Public Library, Chi-
cago Public Library, KCLS
and Booklist “Best Book of
2018.”
Cassella is a practicing
physician and the national
bestselling author of three
novels, “Gemini,” “Healer”
and “Oxygen.” Her books
have been finalists for the
Washington State Book
Award and highlighted as
top choices by Library Jour-

Shalmiyev emigrated
from Leningrad to NYC in
1990. She is an MFA grad-
uate of Portland State Uni-
versity with a second mas-
ter’s degree in creative arts
therapy from the School
of Visual Arts. She lives in
Portland with her two chil-
dren. “Mother Winter” is
her first book.
Zumas’ novel “Red
Clocks” was a New York
Times Editors’ Choice,
an Amazon Best Book of
the Month, and an Indie
Next pick. It was named
as a Best Book of 2018 by
The Atlantic, Huffington
Post, Entropy and the New
York Public Library. Vul-
ture called it one of the 100
Most Important Books of
the 21st Century So Far.
Brooks has been awarded
the Lifetime Achievement
Award from World Fan-
tasy and is one of the big-
gest-selling writers of fan-
tasy living today. He is
best known for his 26-book
“Shannara” series.
The festivities begin
at an author’s reception
on Friday evening from
5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Can-
non Beach Community
Hall. There will be com-
plimentary beverages, hors
d’oeuvres and a chance to
meet the authors.
After the reception
attendees are encourage to
attend the new Lit Crawl.
This event is free and open
to the public. Author and
local favorite Peter Lind-
sey will read at the Cannon
Beach Library from 6:45 to
7:30 p.m. From there par-
ticipants can move to The
Wine Shack to hear Paul
Zitarelli introduce his new
book, “36 Bottles of Wine,”
and sample different vari-
etals of wines featured in
his book.
On Saturday starting
at 10 a.m. at the Surfsand
Ballroom, authors will give
featured presentations and
sign books. Saturday eve-
ning features a hosted din-
ner with Deb Caletti as key-
note speaker.
On Sunday morning, at
the Coaster Theatre Play-
house, Get Lit will conclude
with a 10 a.m. Q-and-A
with all authors on stage.
There will be compli-
mentary coffee and pastries.
“Get Lit at the Beach is
the best party I ever went
to,” author Ursula K. Le
Guin said.

ASTORIA — For
March, the Writer’s Guild
has decided to celebrate
the Association of Writ-
ers and Writing Programs
coming to Portland this
year with a special AWP
reading featuring visiting
poet Francisco Aragon.
The reading — tak-
ing place at WineKraft,
80 10th St., from 6:30 to
8 p.m. Tuesday, March
26 — will also feature
other local writers par-
ticipating in the AWP
conference.
Aragon is the author
of two books of poetry
and a faculty member at
the University of Notre
Dame, where he teaches
creative writing. The
AWP conference will be
held Wednesday through
Saturday, March 27
through 30, at the Port-
land Convention Center.

rent-free studio?
Astoria Visual Arts
seeks applications from
local artists interested in
working in a rent-free stu-
dio from May 1 through
Aug. 31.
The deadline for appli-
cations is midnight Sun-
day, April 7.
The successful can-
didate(s) will be pro-
vided with studio space
in the Astoria Down-
town Historic District
free of charge for the res-
idency period. Those who
have applied in the past
are encouraged to reapply
with an updated portfolio
and artist’s statement.
