THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2019 // 13 Authors tell stories of notable Portland women ASTORIA — The American Association of University Women, Astoria Branch present authors Tracy J. Prince and her daughter Zadie Schaffer at the Astoria Library, 450 10th St., at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19. The women will dis- cuss their book “Nota- ble Women of Portland.” The event is open to the public. Their book explores Oregon’s history through women’s stories during pioneer times, the Pro- gressive Era, World War I, World War II and the post-war era. There are also chapters on “Women in the Arts” and “Women in Politics.” The book describes women who radically changed Ore- gon, including Native Americans, pioneers, doctors, artists, suf- fragists, politicians and authors. Prince, a research pro- fessor at Portland State University, has also writ- ten “Portland’s Goose Hollow,” “Culture Wars in British Literature” and “Portland’s Slabtown.” Her daughter experi- enced a lack of expo- sure to women’s voices at school, and her hope was that “Notable Women of Portland” would shine more light on the often unknown and diverse women who helped shape Oregon. This book has recently been adopted by Portland Public Schools and Catlin Gabel. Kathleen Nyberg Irish stout is on tap at McMenamins for St. Patrick’s Day.
