Right from the start, the Gulls were one of the favorites contending for the 4A state title. The 2018 campaign began with a 55-13 win over Henley, the team that ended Seaside’s 2017 sea- son. The victory was fol- lowed by wins over Marist and Gladstone. The 70-46 drubbing of the Gladia- tors was the fi rst of two wins over Gladstone, Sea- side’s opponent in the state semifi nals. But despite Seaside’s two solid wins over Gladstone, and Glad- stone’s win over Banks … the Braves were the only team that had Seaside’s number. Banks scored a 10-7 win over Seaside in the regular season, then defeated the Gulls 31-20 in the state championship game on a foggy night in Hillsboro. The Gulls landed six players on the all-state team, including superhero running back Alex Teub- ner and three of his per- sonal escorts — offensive linemen Travis Fenton, Isaias Jantes and Paxson VanNortwick. Teubner was the Cowapa League MVP and fi nished 2018 with 2,420 yards rushing and a remarkable 44 touchdowns. Quarterback Pay- ton Westerholm and line- backer Gio Ramirez also received all-state recognition. Aaron Tanabe will take over as head coach in 2019, after Jeff Roberts — who made it known before the season that 2018 would be his fi nal year as coach — stepped down after leading the Gulls to their magical season. Changes are ahead, however. The station recently launched a three- year plan to replace sta- tion equipment, a move that will allow program- mers to offer more call-in style radio shows and solidify the station’s abil- ity to stay on air during an emergency. The station also plans to expand its coverage into Tillamook and offer more area-specifi c con- tent. Coast Community Radio has entered into a partnership with a group in Bay City and will pro- vide equipment and train- ing in an effort to better serve listeners farther down the coast. “The station has had a strong identity since it was started,” said station man- ager Graham Nystrom. He believes the improve- ments, rather than altering that identity, will enhance the programs and services already available. In the coming years, Nystrom hopes to con- tinue to fi nd ways to “open these doors to community access.” CW
