Astoria, Seaside athletes qualify for state
The Daily Astorian
As expected, wrestling power-
house Tillamook ran off with the
District 1/4A title over the weekend.
Hosting the tournament Friday
and Saturday on their home mat,
the Cheesemakers dominated the
eight-team fi eld by scoring 474
team points, well ahead of sec-
ond-place Estacada (224.5). Wood-
burn was third (223.5) and Molalla
fourth (214).
The No. 1-ranked team in the
latest 4A coaches poll, Tillamook
had 13 wrestlers reach the fi nals
in their respective weight classes,
with fi ve winning individual cham-
pionships. The Cheesemakers will
send 21 wrestlers to the state tour-
nament, Feb. 22-23 at Memorial
Coliseum in Portland.
Seaside fi nished seventh in the
district meet with 80.5 points, and
qualifi ed two wrestlers for state,
while Astoria took eighth (31), with
one state qualifi er.
Junior Luke Nelson highlighted
the tournament for the Gulls by tak-
ing second at 220 pounds.
After a fi rst-round bye, Nelson
won by technical fall (15-0 at 5:07)
over Jackson Turner of Estacada,
followed by a 7-1 decision over
Tillamook’s Dawson McKibbin in
a semifi nal match.
Nelson’s day came to a quick
end in the fi nals, as James Ellis of
Banks ran his record to 36-1 with a
22-second pin.
Seaside’s Andrew Gastelum
qualifi ed for state with a third-place
fi nish at 120 pounds.
The junior pinned Wood-
burn’s Ernie Preciado in 5:50 in a
quarterfi nal match, before Quin-
tin Metcalfe of Tillamook pinned
Gastelum in 1:17 in the semifi nals.
Gastelum bounced back strong,
pinning his next two opponents
in consolation. He took care of
Molalla’s Alec Lowry in 1:59, then
won by fall (4:37) over Estacada’s
Landin Vittetoe in the third-place
match.
For Astoria, Skylar Smith
scored 18 points for the Fishermen
by placing third and qualifying for
state at 285 pounds.
Smith scored a quarterfi nal vic-
tory with a pin over Estacada’s
Kenny Clark in 3:52, before Brian
Rieger of Tillamook had a 46-sec-
ond pin over Smith.
Smith rebounded with a 35-sec-
ond fall against Seaside’s Gunner
Knox, then Smith won a rematch
with Clark, scoring a 9-6 decision
in the third-place match.

Swimmers post state-qualifying times
The Daily Astorian
T
he Astoria and Seaside swim teams
had similar results over the weekend
in the District 1/4A meet.
In a meet hosted for years at the Asto-
ria Aquatic Center, this year’s event took
place Friday and Saturday at the Newport
Aquatic Center.
The Valley Catholic girls and the New-
port boys picked up the team champion-
ships, while the Astoria boys took third
and the Seaside girls fourth in the team
standings.
All fi rst- and second-place fi nishers in
each event qualifi ed for state, with sev-
eral third-place fi nishers and even some
fourth-place times qualifying for state as
wild cards.
The Lady Fishermen were sixth in team
scoring, with one individual champion.
Sophomore Tori Smith won the 200-
yard individual medley in 2 minutes,
23.62 seconds, nearly nine seconds ahead
of Newport’s Lorelei Bretz.
And Smith’s day wasn’t over.
In a very competitive 100-yard back-
stroke, Smith took third out of six swim-
mers, but her time of 1:05.02 was good
enough to qualify for state — as was the
fourth-place time (1:07.87) turned in by
Seaside’s Kendy Lin.
Smith will be seeded eighth in the
medley at state, and has the seventh-fast-
est time in the backstroke.
The Lady Gulls also had their share of
success, winning one event in addition to
Lin’s qualifying time in the backstroke.
Seaside’s foursome of Lin, Kaisa Lil-
jenwall, Anna Huddleston and Nicole
Blankenhorn had the winning time (a sea-
son-best 1:52.46) in the 200-yard free-
style relay, as the Gulls edged Newport at
the wall.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Baylor,
Louisville, Oregon and Mississippi
State are the No. 1 seeds in the fi rst
NCAA Top 16 reveal.
The Lady Bears would be the top
team in the Greensboro Region, accord-
ing to the potential seedings revealed
Monday night. The Cardinals would
be the No. 1 seed in Chicago. Ore-
gon would stay near home as the top
team in Portland, and Mississippi State
would have to travel to Albany to be the
top seed there with a potential matchup
against second-seeded UConn in the
regional fi nals.
Other No. 2 seeds in the reveal are
Notre Dame, Stanford and N.C. State.
The three seeds are Oregon State,
Marquette, Maryland and Iowa.
Miami, Iowa State, South Caro-
lina and Gonzaga round out the poten-

Lin added points with a third-place
showing in the 200-yard freestyle
(2:13.67), in a close fi nish with Valley
Catholic’s Emma Nguyen (2:13.26).
Seaside senior Cailin Bennett was
fourth in the 100-yard butterfl y.
Meanwhile, Newport dominated the
boys’ meet, racking up a whopping 454
points, ahead of second place Taft (191),
with Astoria placing third with 155 points.
The fi rst state qualifi er for the Fisher-
men was Riley Cameron, who took third
in the 200 individual medley in 2:17.63.
Cameron also swam leadoff for Asto-
ria’s 200 freestyle relay squad, team-
ing with Elias Simmons, Rocky Rub and
Ryder Dopp to help the Fishermen fi nish
third (1:44.92) behind Newport and Val-
ley Catholic.
The OSAA state meet takes place Fri-
day and Saturday at the Tualatin Hills
Recreation Center in Beaverton.
PEORIA, Ariz. — If nothing
else, the Seattle Mariners’ early
arrival for spring training will
give them a little more meet-
and-greet time.
The Mariners have 20 new
players, including seven pro-
jected new starters, on their
training camp roster this spring
after an offseason overhaul fol-
lowing an 89-victory 2018 that
still left them eight games out of
the playoffs.
“I’ve been studying mugs of
these guys to get a feeling. It’s
going to be a little bit differ-
ent camp with all the new peo-
ple,” manager Scott Servais
said Monday. “A lot of educat-
ing to do. Name tags would be
good. Mandatory wear your jer-
sey out there with the name on
the back.”
The most notable new face
is left-hander Yusei Kikuchi,
who is expected to start one of
the two games the Mariners will
play in his native Japan. Seat-
tle reported to spring training a
day earlier than most to prepare
for the season-opening series
against Oakland in Tokyo on
March 20-21.
Westbrook sets new
triple-double record
in Thunder win
OKLAHOMA CITY —
Russell Westbrook set an NBA
record with his 10th straight tri-
ple-double, Paul George scored
47 points, and the Oklahoma
City Thunder beat the Portland
Trail Blazers 120-111 on Mon-
day night.
Westbrook broke a tie with
Wilt Chamberlain, who had nine
straight triple-doubles in 1968,
by fi nishing with 21 points,
14 rebounds and 11 assists. He
clinched the record on an assist
to George for a 3-pointer with
3:52 remaining in the fourth
quarter. It was his 23rd tri-
ple-double of the season and the
127th of his career.
Damian Lillard scored 31
points and Jake Layman added
17 for Portland.
