Island-style THE OLIVIA NEWBOLD AND CHRISTOPHER DIEGO WEDDING STORY BY CATE GABLE W ithout a doubt, Olivia Newbold and Christopher Diego have had the classic storybook romance. They met in Mrs. Bergerson’s 5th grade class at Warrenton Grade School and were “boyfriend/girlfriend” on and off throughout grade school and junior high before they officially started dating in their senior year. (Then they dated for 12 years before they got married!) After graduation, they moved to Portland where Olivia is a critical care nurse for Kaiser Permanente and Chris is a server for a Thai restaurant. They’ve just purchased their first home in Vancouver, WA, but both of their families live in Warrenton and because they still think of the North 12 OUR COAST WEDDINGS 2019 PHOTOS BY KAELA MEY PHOTOGRAPHY Coast as “home,” they returned for their wedding this past year. Mrs. Bergerson even attended. Christopher was born in the Philippines and lived in Hawaii for many years as a child with his parents John and Lilia Diego and nine other siblings. So the newlyweds’ lives are a mash-up of tropical and Pacific Northwest—Christopher proposed to Olivia on a vacation in Hawaii—and the aesthetics of their wedding reflect that mix. As Olivia says about her bridal flowers, “I wanted simple whites and deep tropical greens, with accents of floral colors, so Nicole, from Pacific Coast Floral Design, used King Protea, Bird of Paradise, white orchids and red ginger. She incorporated lush palm leaves and pops of rose-golds. We also had beautiful ti leaf leis that the men wore, freshly handmade and sent from Hawaii by one of Chris’ aunties.” >> Christopher proposed to Olivia on vacation in Hawaii and the aesthetics of their wedding reflect that mix.
