A10 THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TuESDAY, JANuARY 29, 2019 CONTACT US FOLLOW US Gary Henley | Sports Reporter ghenley@dailyastorian.com facebook.com/ DailyAstorianSports Seaside sweeps Tillamook in dual at the pool The Daily Astorian Gary Henley/The Daily Astorian From left to right, Seaside swimmers Maddy Brown, Nicole Blankenhorn and Kaisa Liljenwall all scored points for the Gulls in last week’s win over Tillamook. “Senior Day” for the Seaside swim team turned out perfect for the home team, as the Gulls hosted Tillamook for a double dual meet last Thursday at the Sunset Pool. The Seaside girls’ and boys’ teams both scored victories over the Mooks for a Cow- apa League sweep in the pool. Seaside defeated Tillamook 94-68 on the girls’ side, while the Seaside boys sunk the Cheesemakers, 103-42. Gulls’ coach Shane Spell called it “a great opportunity to celebrate nine (senior) swimmers who’ve made their time with the team count, whether it was for one season or four. I’m really thankful for their hard work and proud of how they have raced, trained and led.” With postseason meets on the way, “We’re not done yet of course, but it’s spe- cial to get to acknowledge them in front of friends and family.” As for Thursday’s meet, Spell said, “Til- lamook was missing their fastest swim- mer and altered a bit from their normal events, but we had some great swims scat- tered throughout the night, and team depth helped us cover all the events with multiple swimmers.” After the Cheesemakers won the open- ing race (the girls’ 200-yard medley relay), Seaside won most of the events after that, including multiple victories for Kendy Lin (200-yard freestyle, 2 minutes, 23.07 sec- onds, and the 100-yard backstroke, 1:11.02). Other wins for the Seaside girls came from Kaisa Liljenwall (200-yard individual medley, 2:53.96), Cailin Bennett (100-yard butterfly, 1:17.19) and Brooke Blankenhorn (500-yard freestyle, 6:58.68). The Seaside boys had three double win- ners: Aiden Ousley (200 freestyle, 2:34.86 and 500 freestyle, 6:58.52), Sean Olea (200 individual medley, 2:43.35 and 100 back- stroke, 1:14.23) and Henry Garvin (50- yard freestyle, 25.53 and 100-yard freestyle, 56.47). Sam Heroux won the butterfly in 1:24.30. Seaside swept the 400-yard relay races, with the girls (Liljenwall, Taryn Shay, Ben- nett and Blankenhorn) winning in 4:35.58, and the boys (Ousley, Liam Matlock, Her- oux and Olea — all freshmen) in 4:41.58. Ilwaco third in their own ‘Beach Brawl’ The Daily Astorian The host team placed third out of 22 schools at Ilwaco High School’s annual “Beach Brawl” wrestling tournament, held Saturday. While Ilwaco took third in a field of mostly Wash- ington schools, Warren- ton was one of the few Ore- gon schools taking part. The Warriors wrestled in their final nonleague tournament before opening postseason action Feb. 15, when War- renton hosts the district meet. For host Ilwaco, Keegan Kemmer, Ghannon Whelden and Serena Kuhn all took first place for the Fishermen in their respective weight classes. At 138 pounds, Kem- mer had a 24-second pin in the quarterfinals to set up a semifinals match against Lincoln’s Garret Van Doren. Kemmer trailed in the final minute before tying the match with an escape. Then, with both wrestlers on their feet, Kemmer managed a takedown in the final 30 sec- onds and kept Van Doren down the rest of the match to close out the win. In the title bout, Kemmer scored an 11-1 decision over DeMichael McGill of R.A. Long. Whelden won close matches in his final two rounds at 132, defeating Warrenton’s Nic Pior 4-2 and Ocosta’s Daniel Quinby, 7-5. In addition to singing the National Anthem before the tournament, Kuhn domi- nated her bracket, going 3-0, including a 38-second pin in the finals. For Warrenton, “It’s a fun tournament every year, and our last chance to set- tle scores against local, non- league competition,” said Warrenton coach Corey Conant. “This year we fin- ished on the low side of the top 10, but were really pleased with the way our our team wrestled. “We’ve been work- ing on some basics and get- ting some small things fig- ured out before the district tournament, and we made a lot of progress today,” he said. “Almost every wres- tler picked up wins and was able to apply our work in the (practice) room, to their work on the mat.” The Warriors had two wrestlers place third individually. At 132 pounds, Pior “won a fantastic overtime match by staying calm and having great conditioning,” Conant said. “He is really strong at this weight.” Sophomore Triston Scott took third at 285, as Conant says, “Triston has contin- ued his run of beating qual- ity opponents, and is getting smarter in every match.” Elsewhere, fifth-place finishes went to freshman Austin Atwood (120), Armin Rodriguez (126), Giovanni Martinez (145) and Sam Irwin (195). For the Warrenton girls, sophomore Marlie Annat took second at 145 pounds. Noel O’Bryan and Libby Renhert tied for second at 190, and sophomore Ella Gibbs placed second at 130 by injury default. Senior Sahanna Rodriguez was third at 100. Oregon ranked 4th, Oregon State 9th in AP women’s basketball poll By DOUG FEINBERG Associated Press N EW YORK — Kim Mulkey and Baylor returned to No. 1 in The Associated Press wom- en’s college basketball poll on Monday for the first time nearly six years. The Lady Bears (17-1) ascended to the top spot after then-No. 1 Notre Dame lost to unranked North Carolina on Sunday. Baylor, which received 24 of 28 first-place votes from a national media panel, last was No. 1 in the final poll of the 2012-13 sea- son. The team was the top choice among voters for the final 11 weeks of that season. “Anything that’s consid- ered positive for our pro- gram and Baylor, we wel- come. But really, what does it mean? It doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t win a championship for you. It just puts a bigger target on your back,” Mulkey said after the Lady Bears beat Oklahoma on Sunday. “It’s not the first time we’ve been ranked No. 1 ... I don’t think it will change anything about the kids in the locker room. I don’t think it will change anything about our practices. Our focus, right now, is Okla- homa State, and then our big focus is winning another Big 12 championship.” The Fighting Irish fell to fifth, with UConn, Louis- ville and Oregon following Baylor. Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Stanford, Oregon State and Marquette rounded out the top 10. The Wolfpack are the only unde- feated team left in Division I basketball. BYU entered the poll at No. 25 while Missouri fell out. It’s the Cougars first ranking since Feb. 13, 2012. Along with Utah, BYU gives the state of Utah two ranked teams for the first time since 2006, when both were in the AP Top 25. RISING UTES: One week after entering the poll, Utah moved up to No. 14 after beating then-No. 6 Stanford on Sunday. It’s the school’s best ranking since the Utes were 12th on March 10, 2008. The team’s best ranking ever was 11th in 1998. LAST OF THE UNBEATENS: N.C. State (20-0) visits Wake Forest and host North Carolina this week. If the Wolfpack still haven’t lost at that point, the schedule gets a bit tougher, with consecutive road games at No. 24 Florida State and No. 18 Syracuse before host- ing Notre Dame. SCHEDULE A - Charter Astoria/ Seaside - L - Charter Long Beach NEW YORK — Ten- nessee stayed atop the AP Top 25 men’s college bas- ketball poll for a second straight week. The Volunteers earned 48 of 64 first-place votes in Monday’s poll to extend the program’s first stint at No. 1 since February 2008. Tennessee (18-1, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) has won 14 straight games — the program’s longest run since the 1922-23 sea- son and one shy of the school record — since suf- fering a neutral-court loss to Kansas in November. The top six teams in the poll remained unchanged, with Duke sitting at No. 2, followed by Virginia, Gonzaga, Michigan and Michigan State. The Spar- tans stayed put despite suf- fering their first Big Ten loss at Purdue in a game that helped lift the Boiler- makers back into the poll.
