THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2019 // 17 Birdies. Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Have you heard about the birds? FORT STEVENS — Join an Oregon state parks ranger on a guided walk to look for and identify birds from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, during Fort Stevens State Park’s monthly bird survey. No birding experience is required. Experts are wel- come to come share their knowledge. The North Coast Land Conservancy Volunteers work together to remove thick ivy vines creeping up a Sitka spruce at the North Coast Land Conservancy’s Sand Creek Wetlands Habitat Reserve, near Skipanon Forest, in January 2018. Franklin Apartments scheduled this steward- ship day in the winter, when the deciduous veg- etation has died back and it’s a little easier to move around, but volunteers can still expect rough walking. Most of the ivy at Skipanon Forest is growing on large Sitka spruce trees, but there may be some on the ground as well. Handsaws, lop- pers and other tools will be used to remove this inva- sive vine. Email Stewardship Director Melissa Reich at melissar@nclctrust.org or call her at 503-738-9126 if you plan to attend. She will provide directions to the site (and will notify volunteers should inclem- ent weather force a change of date). Wear gloves and work boots. The Land Con- servancy will supply the tools. Bring water and snacks/lunch; there are no toilets and no potable water at the site. Dogs are not allowed on any NCLC properties. Details about this and other North Coast Land Conservancy volun- teer opportunities are at NCLCtrust.org; look for Hands-on Stewardship under “EVENTS.” For more information, contact Park Ranger Dane Osis: dane.osis@oregon.gov 503-861-3170, ext. 41. 1113 Commercial Street Astoria, OR 97103 503-468-0308 COASTER THEATRE PLAYHOUSE Tackle ivy along the Skipanon WARRENTON — Inva- sive English ivy has a foot- hold along the Skipanon River in Warrenton, where it climbs into Sitka spruces and other native trees, caus- ing them to rot and ulti- mately topple. North Coast Land Con- servancy is seeking volun- teers for a stewardship day, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, to tackle ivy in the conservancy’s Skipanon Forest Habitat Reserve.
