LA teachers go on strike in 2nd-largest US school district
Trump rejects suggested short-term
government shutdown fi x
LOS ANGELES — Tens of
thousands of Los Angeles teachers
went on strike today after conten-
tious contract negotiations failed in
the nation’s second-largest school
district.
Members of United Teachers
Los Angeles voted last year to walk
off the job for the fi rst time in three
decades if a deal wasn’t reached on
issues including higher wages and
smaller class sizes.
Months of talks between the
union with 35,000 members and the
Los Angeles Unifi ed School Dis-
trict ended without a deal. It follows
teacher walkouts in other states that
emboldened organized labor.
Schools will stay open because
the district with 640,000 students
has hired hundreds of substitutes
to replace teachers and others who
leave for picket lines. The union
has called it irresponsible to hire
substitutes and called on parents to
consider keeping students home or
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump today
rejected the suggestion that he temporarily reopen govern-
ment while negotiations continue on his proposed border
wall, signaling no speedy resolution to the partial govern-
ment shutdown now into a fourth week.
Leaving the White House for a trip to New Orleans,
Trump said he had dismissed the proposal from Republican
Sen. Lindsey Graham to reopen for several weeks and con-
tinue dealing with Democrats over Trump’s long-promised
wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
“I did reject it, yes,” Trump said. “I’m not interested. I
want to get it solved. I don’t want to just delay it.”
Trump also backed further away from the idea of declar-
ing a national emergency as an escape hatch, saying: “I’m
not looking to call a national emergency. This is so simple
we shouldn’t have to.”
As Congress returned to Washington for their second
week of legislative business since House control reverted to
Democrats, the shutdown hit Day 24, affecting federal work-
ers and services with no end in sight. Trump has demanded
$5.7 billion for his long-promised wall, while Democrats,
who oppose the wall as both immoral and wasteful, insist
Trump re-open the government before they negotiate bor-
der security.
Winter storm punishes swath of US
with snow, ice and freezing rain
A winter storm that contributed to at least fi ve deaths in
the Midwest pummeled the mid-Atlantic region for a sec-
ond day Sunday, bringing with it an icy mix that knocked
out power, cancelled fl ights and contributed to hundreds of
car accidents.
Virginia State Police said the driver of a military sur-
plus vehicle was killed late Saturday after he lost control on
Interstate 81 because of slick road conditions.
Police said Ronald W. Harris, 73, of Gainesville, Geor-
gia, died after his vehicle was struck by two tractor-trail-
ers. The two tractor-trailer drivers were taken to a hospital
for injuries that were not life-threatening. The state med-
ical examiner determined Sunday that Harris’ death was
storm-related, police said.
Virginia State Police said they responded to more than
300 traffi c crashes and helped nearly 200 disabled vehicles
in Virginia from midnight to late Sunday afternoon.
The storm knocked out power to nearly 200,000 people
in Virginia and North Carolina at its height Sunday, accord-
ing to PowerOutage.us.
Meanwhile, the storm caused headaches for travelers
into and out of airports in the region, including more than
250 fl ight cancellations Sunday at the three main airports
serving the nation’s capital. Washington’s Dulles Interna-
tional Airport tweeted that the Federal Aviation Administra-
tion had implemented a ground stop there on Sunday eve-
ning, impacting both inbound and outbound fl ights.
Judge blocks Trump birth control
coverage rules in 13 states
OAKLAND, Calif. — A U.S. judge in California on
Sunday blocked Trump administration rules, which would
allow more employers to opt out of providing women with
no-cost birth control, from taking effect in 13 states and
Washington, D.C.
Judge Haywood Gilliam granted a request for a prelimi-
nary injunction by California, 12 other states and Washing-
ton, D.C. The plaintiffs sought to prevent the rules from tak-
ing effect as scheduled today while a lawsuit against them
moved forward.
But Gilliam limited the scope of the ruling to the
plaintiffs, rejecting their request that he block the rules
nationwide.
The changes would allow more employers, including
publicly traded companies, to opt out of providing no-cost
contraceptive coverage to women by claiming religious
objections. Some private employers could also object on
moral grounds.
California and the other states argue that women would
be forced to turn to state-funded programs for birth control
and experience unintended pregnancies.
The ruling affects California, Connecticut, Delaware,
Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, North
Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington,
and the District of Columbia.
Trump denies ever working
for Russia, blasts investigators
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump denied today
he ever worked for Russia, answering a question he declined
to directly address over the weekend.
Speaking from the South Lawn before departing the
White House for New Orleans, Trump called former FBI and
Justice Department offi cials “known scoundrels” and “dirty
cops.” He was reacting to a New York Times report that law
enforcement offi cials began investigating, in 2017, whether
Trump had been working on behalf of Russia against U.S.
interests.
“I never worked for Russia,” he told reporters. Trump
didn’t directly answer the question in a Saturday Fox News
interview.
“I think it’s the most insulting thing I’ve ever been asked,”
Trump told Jeanine Pirro, a personal friend. “I think it’s the
most insulting article I’ve ever had written, and if you read
the article you’ll see that they found absolutely nothing.”
Trump went on to assert that no president has taken a
harder stance against Russia than he has.
White House aides expressed regret over the weekend that
the president did not more clearly and forcefully deny being a
Russian agent when asked by the usually friendly Fox News
host, according to three White House aides and Republicans
close to the White House.
Trump’s AG nominee: ‘Vitally
important’ Mueller fi nish work
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s nominee
for attorney general will tell senators at his confi rmation hear-
ing “it is vitally important” that special counsel Robert Muel-
ler be allowed to complete his Russia investigation, accord-
ing to prepared remarks obtained by the Associated Press.
“I believe it is in the best interest of everyone — the Pres-
ident, Congress, and, most importantly, the American people
— that this matter be resolved by allowing the Special Coun-
sel to complete his work,” William Barr will say.
He will also address concerns that the results of Mueller’s
investigation into potential coordination between the 2016
Trump presidential campaign and Russia might never be dis-
closed, saying it is “very important” that Congress and the
public be informed of the prosecution team’s fi ndings.
“For that reason, my goal will be to provide as much trans-
parency as I can consistent with the law,” Barr said. “I can
assure you that, where judgments are to be made by me, I
will make those judgments based solely on the law and will
let no personal, political, or other improper interests infl uence

The remarks are an acknowledgment that Barr’s han-
dling of Mueller’s investigation will take center stage at
Tuesday’s hearing before the Senate Judiciary Commit-
tee. They’re intended to reassure Democratic senators trou-
bled by Barr’s past comments on the special counsel’s probe,
including an unsolicited memo he sent the Justice Depart-
ment last year criticizing the inquiry into whether the presi-
dent had obstructed justice.
US tells Saudi king, prince to hold
Khashoggi’s murderers accountable
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — U.S. Secretary of State Mike
Pompeo said he told the king and crown prince of Saudi Ara-
bia today that the Trump administration expects the kingdom
to hold accountable “every single person” responsible for the
slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed inside
one of the country’s consulates after writing columns critical
of the government.
In talks with Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman, who has been accused by some of
complicity in the murder, Pompeo said he had been clear
about the administration’s expectations.
Pompeo also said that President Donald Trump’s threat
to devastate NATO ally Turkey’s economy if it attacks U.S.-
backed Kurdish fi ghters in Syria underscored America’s
commitment to its Kurd partners. He said he assumed Trump
was referring to sanctions that could be imposed if Turkey
takes military action against the Kurds but referred questions
to the White House.
At the end of a trip to Riyadh that also focused on Mideast
crises and countering threats from Iran, Pompeo said he had
raised the Khashoggi case in his meetings with Saudi King
Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as well as
other human rights concerns, and the fate of women’s rights
activists who have been detained in the kingdom.
