spokesman for the Coast
Guard’s District 13 in Seat-
tle, said Coast Guardsmen
received an email Friday
from Ray explaining they
would receive their normal
paychecks today for the past
two weeks.
“He said internally the
organization found a way to
fund everyone through this
next paycheck,” Tippets said.
Ray also indicated that
no further paychecks would
come until the government
shutdown is resolved, Tip-
pets said.

County: Astoria has faced a gradual
decline over the past several decades

The
county’s
fast-
est-growing city, Warrenton,
was at 5,310 this year, up
more than 2.5 percent from
fi ve years ago.
As an affordable suburb
of Astoria, Warrenton has
grown rapidly from 2,681 in
1990 to 4,096 in 2000 and
4,989 in 2010. Some of the
growth is attributable to the
city’s merger with Ham-
mond, which included nearly
600 people before it joined
Warrenton in 1991.
Astoria, the county seat,
shrunk slightly from 9,735 in
2017 to 9,695 this year.
Although it has grown by
about 1 percent over the past
fi ve years, Astoria has faced
a gradual decline over the
past several decades, shrink-
ing from 10,069 in 1990 to
9,813 in 2000 and 9,477 in
2010.
Seaside was at 6,660 as of
July 1, up from 6,620 in 2017
and 6,560 fi ve years ago. The
city has steadily grown over
the past several decades,
from 5,359 in 1990 to 5,900
in 2000 and 6,457 in 2010.
Cannon Beach’s popula-
tion increased by fi ve people
to 1,710. The wealthy coastal
enclave has slowly grown
over the decades from 1,221
in 1990 to 1,588 in 2000 and
1,690 in 2010.
Gearhart grew by nearly
1.7 percent to 1,505 as of
July 1. The city has grown by
one-third since 1990, when
it numbered just over 1,000
people.
Taylor: ‘I love being on the
edge ... new things, a new life’

Because Taylor spent
much of her young adult
life in Iran, moving back to
the U.S. felt like a culture
shock. After living in a war-
torn nation ruled by rations,
she remembers feeling awe-
struck by the sheer amount
of stuff available at an Amer-
ican grocery or retail store.
“Over there, if there was
one banana you wanted to
be the one to get it, so you
rush in and be the one to get
it,” Taylor said. “I remem-
ber walking into a store and
realizing, ‘Oh my god, I’m
in America now. There’s
plenty of stuff, I don’t need
to rush.’ That was one of the
fi rst realizations I wasn’t in
the Middle East anymore.”
Taylor eventually decided
to enroll at a vocational
school, which introduced
her to the idea of becoming
a clerk at U.S. bankruptcy
court, a job she worked for
more than 31 years.
Taylor enjoyed her work
for the most part. In com-
parison with her other expe-
riences around the world,
she always found it fortu-
nate that her home country
had a system available to
relieve people of their debt
that wasn’t debtors prison.
But one of the most dif-
fi cult aspects of working for
the courts was seeing the
same people abuse bank-
ruptcy , she said, repeatedly
coming back to her offi ce.
“That was sad to see,”
Taylor said.
These days, Taylor can
be found volunteering with
organizations like the food
bank and the history cen-
ter. When the weather per-
mits, she can often be found
walking along the ocean that
drew her in the fi rst place.
“I’m so excited to be
here,” she said. “I love being
on the edge ... new things, a
new life.”
