Oregon’s Ionescu gets
13th triple-double,
sets NCAA record
EUGENE
—
Sabrina
Ionescu set an NCAA record
with her 13th triple-double and
Ruthy Hebard had 20 points on
9-for-9 shooting to lead No. 7
Oregon past Air Force 82-36 on
Thursday.
Ionescu, who shared the
career mark with BYU’s Kyle
Collinsworth, finished with
17 points, 11 rebounds and 13
assists for the Ducks (10-1)
in her 82nd game. The junior
All-America guard broke the
record with her 10th rebound
during the fourth quarter.
Acting coach Mark Camp-
bell subbed Ionescu and Hebard
out with five minutes to play.
He filled in for Oregon coach
Kelly Graves, who is serving a
two-game NCAA suspension
for allowing violations by an
assistant strength coach during
practice two seasons ago.
Hebard, who came in ranked
fifth nationally in shooting
accuracy at 69.0 percent, was
7-for-7 in the first half. Satou
Sabally added 19 points and
eight rebounds for the Ducks,
and Erin Boley had 11 points.
Haley Jones led the Fal-
cons (4-7) with eight points and
Riley Snyder had seven.
Air Force stayed close mid-
way through the second quar-
ter before Oregon closed out the
half on a 17-4 run to lead 37-22.
Ionescu already was well on
her way to making history with
eight points, seven rebounds
and nine assists.

efending tournament champion
Newport opened the day at the
Seaside Holiday Classic with a
59-31 victory over Astoria.
The Fishermen trailed just 12-8 after
the first eight minutes, but Newport’s
shooters soon took over, helping the Cubs
build a 47-23 lead through three quarters.
Justin Plechaty, a 6-foot-3 senior,
scored 17 points to lead Newport. Fred
Hidalgo added 12 and Matt Beaudry
scored 11 for the Cubs, 6-2 overall.
Isaac Brockman scored eight points to
lead Astoria, which faces an equally diffi-
cult challenge Friday against Madras in a
consolation round game.
Marist Catholic defeated Madras 78-73
in another Thursday first round game.
Elma tops Astoria girls
in rematch, 47-30
SEASIDE — This year’s Seaside Hol-
iday Classic features a girls’ bracket filled
with potential state tournament teams,
from both sides of the Columbia River.
In Thursday’s tournament opener — a
10 a.m. tip-off between Elma and Astoria
— the Eagles improved their record to 8-0
with a 47-30 win over the Lady Fishermen.
The game was a rematch of last year’s
championship game in the Seaside tourna-
ment, also won by Elma.
After building a 13-12 lead after one
quarter in Thursday’s game, the Eagles
went on a 26-8 run over the next two quar-
ters to win the rematch.
Six-foot junior forward Quin Mikel
scored 12 points, and teammates Kali
Rambo and Jalyn Sackrider (also both
juniors) added 11 apiece for Elma, ranked
seventh out of 65 teams at the Washing-
ton 1A level.
Halle Helmersen scored nine points
and Julia Norris added seven for Astoria,
which had 38 turnovers. The Fishermen
will play Newport in a consolation game
Friday at 9:30 a.m.
Seaside boys open tourney
with win over Montesano
The Seaside boys capped Thursday’s
action in the annual Seaside Holiday Clas-
sic basketball tournament with a late 78-52
win over Montesano.
The Bulldogs hung close for a while,
trailing 14-12, but the Gulls left the ‘Dogs
in the dust, as three 3-pointers from Beau
Johnson in the first quarter (and a fourth
from Brayden Johnson) helped Seaside to
Kelsey Fausett, center, drives toward the basket for Astoria.
a 17-12 lead.
The Gulls opened the second period
with scores from Payton Westerholm,
Chase Januik and Duncan Thompson for
an eventual 30-12 advantage, and a 42-23
halftime lead.
Westerholm led the Gulls with a game-
high 20 points, followed by Januik (15)
and Beau Johnson (13). Seaside will play
Corbett in a Friday semifinal (8:45 p.m.),
with the winner to play either Newport or
Marist in Saturday’s championship.
Seaside girls pull away,
defeat Crook County
The Seaside girls opened their own bas-
ketball tournament against winless Crook
County in a late Thursday matchup.
And the Cowgirls are still winless
(0-5), as the Lady Gulls pulled away in the
second quarter for an easy 44-20 win.
Emy Kiser scored 10 points and Lilli
Taylor added eight for Seaside, which led
just 4-2 after one quarter. But it was 19-7
by halftime, as the Gulls picked up second
quarter 3-pointers from Katie Zagata and
Tristyn McFadden.
From there, the Gulls did what they do
best — force turnovers and dominate the
boards — and finished the game with an
18-2 run.
“One shouldn’t disparage victories, so I
shall bite my tongue,” said Seaside coach
Mike Hawes. “However, should the same
mental preparation appear (Friday) night,
victory probably won’t be an option.
“We did a nice job of spreading the
scoring and mental mistakes,” he said.
“Almost everybody contributed. But
Crook County was susceptible to pressure
and therefore had even more turnovers
than us, fortunately.”
Player of the game honors, he added,
“I probably give to Katie Zapata, who hit
a couple timely threes and played solid
throughout. On the bright side we did
make our free throws (13-for-16), which
we’ve been practicing. Now if we’d quit
practicing throwing the ball away and
missing shots …”
Seaside advances to the semifinal
round, and will play Cottage Grove Fri-
day at 7 p.m. The winner will play either
Elma or Marist in Saturday’s champion-
ship game.
Knappa boys, Lady Loggers
drop road games
DAYTON — It was a tough day to be a
Knappa Logger.
In a first-round boys game of Dayton’s
holiday tournament, Knappa came up
short against the host team, as the Pirates
scored a 70-50 win over the Loggers.
Trailing 53-36 entering the final quar-
ter, Knappa fought back to within 56-42,
but Dayton closed the contest on a 14-8
run.
Meanwhile, the Knappa girls were on
the road for a nonleague game against
Riverdale, which posted a 73-36 victory
over the Lady Loggers.
The Knappa boys continue play in the
Dayton tournament Friday.
