Hoffman Center serves ‘Plate Invitational’ Try
out for
‘Robin
Hood’
MANZANITA — The Hoff-
man Center for the Arts
Gallery in Manzanita is
hosting a “Plate Invitational”
fundraiser through Dec. 30.
The show is open 1 to 4 p.m.
Fridays through Sundays.
Gallery visitors can bid on
plates painted by 21 North
Coast painters. The plates
themselves were created by
11 North Coast potters.
Volunteers in the Hoffman
Clay program organized,
finished and fired the plates.
Curating the show is local
resident Bonnie Laing-Mal-
colmson, whose background
includes serving as past
president of the Oregon
College of Art and Craft in

Portland, as well as curatorial
positions with the Portland
Art Museum.
Bids can be placed on
pieces displayed in the gal-
lery throughout the month,
but there will also be a “buy
now” price.
All proceeds will fund
improvements to the Hoff-
man Center’s restroom and
kitchenette.
The show also includes
“New Year’s Day” photos
of Twin Rocks Beach by
Robbie McClaran, a fine-art
photographer whose works
have been shown in muse-
ums across the U.S., includ-
ing the Portland Art Museum.
His book will be available for
purchase at the gallery.

Enter the ‘Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin’
MANZANITA — The Hoffman
Center for the Arts in Man-
zanita will screen the new
documentary film “Worlds
of Ursula K. Le Guin” at the
North County Performing
Arts Center in Nehalem, 7:30
p.m. Friday, Dec. 21. Admis-
sion is $5.
The screening will be the
North Coast premier of the
2018 film. Previous showings
have taken place in Tacoma,
Ashland, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe,

Directed by Arwen Curry,
the 65-minute film explores
the life and legacy of the late
feminist author.
Best known for ground-
breaking science fiction and
fantasy works such as “A
Wizard of Earthsea,” “The
Left Hand of Darkness” and
“The Dispossessed,” Le Guin
lived the last 59 years of her
life in Portland, often visiting
the coast to write in Cannon
Beach. She came to Manzani-
ta in July 2008 to participate
in the Hoffman Center’s
Manzanita Writers’ Series.
Produced with Le Guin’s
participation over the course
of a decade, “Worlds” is a
journey through the writer’s
career and her worlds, both
real and fantastic. It is the first
film to capture her story.
The film features stunning
animation and reflections by
literary luminaries includ-
ing Margaret Atwood, Neil
Gaiman, David Mitchell,
Michael Chabon and more.
It was created with support
from the National Endow-
ment for the Humanities,
California Humanities, the
Berkeley Film Foundation
and 3,185 backers on Kick-
starter.
A merry musical
adventure
staged at
Astor Street
ASTORIA — Auditions
for “Robin Hood: The
Musical” take place 2
p.m. Saturday and Sun-
day, Jan. 5 and 6., at the
Astor Street Opry Com-
pany Playhouse, 129 W.
Bond St. in Uniontown.
Director Bill Carr
is looking for a couple
dozen 11 to 18 year olds.
No prior experience is
required. There is a fee
to participate in this
production, but schol-
arship opportunities are
available. Rehearsals
are weekdays from 4 to
7 p.m., with no rehears-
als on days there is no
school.
Performances are 2
p.m. Saturdays and Sun-
days, Feb. 16 through
March 3. Tickets are $10
for adults, $5 for chil-
dren 12 and under, and
