Virtuosos bring
Brazilian choro
to Long Beach
LONG BEACH, WASH. — The
Peninsula Arts Center pres-
ents Brazilian choro from
Rio Con Brio at 7 p.m. Sat-
urday, Dec. 8. Doors open at
6:30 p.m.
Rio Con Brio began
as a vehicle for virtuoso
mandolinist Tim Connell to
indulge his obsession with
the Brazilian national music
“choro.” Joined by fellow
gypsy jazz string player
Mike Burdette, the two soon
built a large repertoire of
these quirky instrumental
tunes.
Because of their tech-
nique and Connell’s adven-
turous improvisation, they
have been featured in tra-
ditionally classical concert
series and jazz festivals.

Temple Bar kicks off a
continuing series — the
Local Comic Showcase
— beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 6. The se-
ries will continue the first
Thursday of the month.
There is no cover.
Homegrown, free-
range Astorian talent
will be highlighted. This
month’s comedians are
Public Emily No. 1, B
Lee (Mr. Sunshine),
Pete Birdeno, Spencer
Linderman and, of Astor
Street Opry fame, Dave
Bergquist.
Come early for great

Happy hour runs from
4 to 7 p.m. seven days a

Brennan and Jon Neufeld play
the Sou’wester Lodge at 8
p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
Brennan — a Port-
land-based singer-songwriter
and instrumentalist — ex-
plores the intimate corners of
acoustic, roots and Americana.
His side-project, pigWar,
explores the fringes of soul,
psychedelic and rock.
He and Neufeld have been
playing together since 2008
through various incarnations
and have released three al-
bums together.
Their Sou’wester show
opens a new vault of material
they are preparing to take into
the studio for their next album.
This all-ages event is free
and open to the public. The

National comics take
Labor Temple stage
ASTORIA — The Labor
Temple Bar in Astoria hosts
the Joker and Jester Nation-
al Comedy tour with Tony
Dijamco and Jake Daniels at
8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.
Admission is $5. Only
attendees 21 and older may
attend.
Daniels is one of the
hardest working comedians
around, involved with more
than 300 shows annually. He
spends several months a year
touring the U.S. doing com-
edy shows nightly in bars,
stadiums and comedy clubs.
Dijamco has been im-
pressing audiences all over
the country with his fierce
mix of quick wit, sardon-
ic humor, and vocal and
physical act-outs for more
than 17 years. His style has
made him a club favorite and
sought-out performer on col-
lege campuses everywhere.
Recently, Dijamco was
seen on NBC’s “Last Comic
Standing.”
