JEWELL BLUE JAYS
BASKETBALL
Wawro takes over as Jewell coach
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
O
ne retirement at
the end of last sea-
son created two new
job openings at Jewell High
School.
Longtime coach Mark Fick
— who coached both Jewell
boys and girls basketball for
the last few years — retired
following the very last games
of the 2017-18 season, so the
Blue Jays had to go looking for
two replacements for the one
departure.
While David Samuelson
will coach the Jewell boys, the
Lady Jays will be under the
guidance of Hailee Wawro,
who served as an assistant to
Fick last year with the Jewell
girls.
The Lady Jays are com-
ing off a 14-9 season, in which
they finished third in the Casco
League standings at 9-5, but
worked their way to the No. 2
seed for the state playoffs with
a 25-16 victory over Cross-
hill Christian in the league
tournament.
Jewell went on to lose a
48-27 decision to Perrydale
for the No. 1 seed, then came
up short in a first-round state
playoff game against South-
west Christian.
It was still a successful year
for Jewell, and now Wawro
will have to replace four
seniors heading into the 2018-
19 season.
THE LADY JAYS
Jewell’s preseason roster
includes a healthy list of return-
ers, led by seniors Lily Kaczenski
and Cheyenne Stapleton.
The Jays also have three
juniors with varsity experience
— Nedi Morales, Haley Nor-
man and Haven Shaw — while
sophomores Lillie Meier and
Ally Phillips, and freshmen
Brenna Shaw and Alivia Swear-
ingen round out the roster.
THE CASCO
LEAGUE
The Casco will be a little
tougher than it was last season,
as the league welcomes back
St. Paul, which played last
year in the Class 2A Tri-River
Conference.
The Buckaroos were 24-6
at the 2A level, and finished
third in the state tournament.
Following back-to-back
losses against Perrydale and
Livingstone Adventist last sea-
son, Jewell responded with
five straight wins.
They were 13-5 following
a 28-20 victory over Living-
stone Feb. 1, but lost four of
their last five.
The Lady Jays will be
tested early this season, with
a Dec. 4 game at Knappa, fol-
lowed two days later with their
league opener at Perrydale.

Jewell boys
program
rebuilding
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
Jewell boys basketball will
be building from the ground up
for the 2018-19 season.
The Blue Jays have a new
coach, as David Samuelson
takes over for Mark Fick. And
greeting Samuelson in his first
season is a roster
of 10 players that
includes six fresh-
men, three sopho-
mores and a junior.
If the youth-
ful lineup wasn’t
enough, Jewell is
coming off a sea-
son in which the
Jays had just one
win, and finished 1-20 overall,
0-14 in Casco League play.
A 27-18 win over Portland
Waldorf was the only victory
in Jewell’s season of discon-
tent, as the Jays closed out the
year with 15 straight losses.
THE BLUE JAYS
Samuelson is looking at a
complete roster rebuild. Only
two athletes on Jewell’s pre-
season list of players (soph-
omores Eddie Berg and Des-
mond Martin) were on last
year’s team, which had five
seniors.
The eight newcomers
include junior Josh Ruch
and sophomore Aiden Bixel,
along with freshmen Cyrus
Blodgett, Jackson Gnuschke,
Nick Nikander, Bradley Rog-
ers, Andy Valdez and Zachary
Van Dyke.
THE CASCO
LEAGUE
Crosshill
Christian is the
defending Casco
League champion,
as the Eagles went
13-1 in league,
before losing in
the first round of the state
playoffs.
The Blue Jays will spend
the first couple weeks of the
season on the road, as they
open with games at North
Clackamas, Open Door Chris-
tian Academy and Perrydale,
followed by three games in the
Southwest Christian tourna-
ment, Dec. 7-8.
Jewell’s home opener is
Dec. 13 vs. Oregon School for
the Deaf.
