Makers: Group looking for anchor tenant to rent retail space
ing list of about 50 people look-
ing for space, Eiter said. After
an initial walk-through, most
of the spaces were rented out
immediately.
“It’s a pretty good group,”
Eiter said. “The idea was to
have dedicated art space, but a
variety.”
Astoria Makers is still finish-
ing the basement, where artist
Yoshi Moro has set up a paint-
ing studio. The group is also still
looking for the anchor tenant to
rent the building’s corner retail
space at 10th and Duane streets,
but is waiting for one who fits
Astoria Makers’ mission of art
and creativity, Eiter said.
The upstairs studios of the
Van Dusen Building will be
open during Second Saturday
Art Walk on Dec. 8 for the pub-
lic to meet the artists and view
their work in a pop-up gallery.
Long is open weekdays from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. and starting youth
and adult ceramics classes in
January.
Those involved in the build-
ing hope its creative juices will
help draw more visitors to the
western side of downtown,
similar to the Astoria Arts and
Movement Center.
“This building can help revi-
talize and get people to come
down here,” Eiter said.
Continued from Page 1A
A main component of the
building was to be a member-
ship-driven, collaborative mak-
erspace for light manufactur-
ers, similar to others in larger
cities. But the costs and staff-
ing needed to make the con-
cept work were too high, Her-
man said.
“We were going to have the
elaborate membership program,
but that will be more organic
now,” he said.
Herman still runs Astoria
Makers, a small manufacturing
shop on the main floor taking on
projects such as Fort George’s
tap handles. He has gleaned his
co-workers from Clatsop Com-
munity College’s historic pres-
ervation program and others
interested in the building.
Lief Stewart, who is plan-
ning an electronics repair lab in
the basement, said he was walk-
ing by the Van Dusen Building
one day and became interested
in the work going on inside. He
has since joined the staff and
has been working with Her-
man on other projects such as
remote-controlled, experimen-
tal LED lighting made from
laser-cut plywood.
“The eventual idea is to start

who rented a studio to make
wax canvas and leather bags
for his accessory company,
Wheeler Bag Co.
“I learned to sew from my
dad,” Wheeler said. “He makes
boat covers and tents.”
Wheeler tired of being a
graphic designer several years
ago and melded his interests
into an accessory company sell-
ing online and at stores around
the U.S. Recently relocated
from Portland, Wheeler was
looking to take the business
out of his basement and ended
up renting a small studio from
Astoria Makers.
“It’s really fun to run into
other artists,” Wheeler said
of the communal feel of the
upstairs studios, complete with
a lounge and kitchen.
When they started gauging
interest in the Van Dusen Build-
ing, Astoria Makers had a wait-

dio backing that,” Stewart said.
“I know Glen is very supportive
of that entrepreneurial mindset
around here.”
One of Astoria Makers’ first
tenants was Long, who opened
her pottery studio over the sum-
mer. A potter for the last 17
years, she came to Astoria by
way of Detroit and Miami. She
was looking at buildings for her
studio when she met Herman.
Long has helped build out
the Van Dusen Building and
enjoys the collaborative nature
of individual tenants. “I think it
adds a lot to Astoria to have a
large cooperative of artists,” she
said.
All but two of the 13 upstairs
studios have been rented out
to local artists and other pro-
fessionals. Often the noisiest
among them is Nick Wheeler,
Knappa: Students, staff, principals looked at educational needs
Continued from Page 1A
Several school districts
have recently passed large
school improvement and con-
struction bonds, including
nearly $100 million for a new
K-12 campus in Seaside; $38.5
million for a master cam-
pus and new middle school in
Warrenton; and $70 million in
Astoria for school improve-
ments and a new academic
wing at the middle school.
County
voters
also
approved a $20 million bond
to move the Clatsop County
Jail in Astoria to a former state
youth prison in Warrenton.
The Knappa School Board
last year hired Portland firm
DOWA-IBI Group to assess
building needs after the school
district received $55,000 in
state grants. The company
recently issued a final report
detailing nearly $4.9 million in
needed remodels and upgrades
at Knappa High School
and more than $3.8 million
at Hilda Lahti Elementary
School, including nearly $4
million combined to upgrade
heating and ventilation sys-
tems. The firm also found $3.8
million needed in surrounding
infrastructure improvements
and nearly $4 million for
safety and security, including
more than $2.7 million to seis-
mically upgrade the schools to
withstand a large earthquake.
The report also laid out
the potential cost of building
a new 6,000-square-foot aca-
demic hall for middle school-
ers in the K-8 Hilda Lahti
campus at $2.5 million, a
9,000-square-foot multipur-
pose room for $2.9 million and
a 15,000-square-foot multipur-
pose room for $5.1 million.
The state grants also paid
for a public outreach cam-
paign. The school district
assembled a committee of 21
students, 21 staff, two princi-
pals and Johnson to look at the
district’s educational needs.
The committee’s recommen-
trict’s biggest needs.
Cullen Bangs, vice chair-
man of the school board, said
the school district only has
a certain bond amount it can
reach. “Looking through the
list, you start hitting on the
things that really need to be
done, and there’s not a lot left,”
he said. “It’s going to be down
to a couple items here and
there, and that’s where we’ll
need to make a decision.”
Board member Ed Johnson
dations focused on improv-
ing the district’s career-techni-
cal and technology offerings;
partnering with Clatsop Com-
munity College and local
industries; and improving the
buildings’ physical environ-
ment and security.
With a list of needs vastly
outstripping any realistic bond
measure, school board mem-
bers asked Johnson to gather
more input from community
and staff as to the school dis-
cautioned that some people are
already throwing cold water on
the possibility of a new bond
after the existing one expires.
“I’ve already heard com-
ments … from community
members saying, ‘Ah, you
know, that school board. As
soon as this bond expires,
they’ll just want to pass
another one,’” he said. “So
you really need to have some
good, solid stuff that people
can believe in.”

Port: Challenge is finding
money to fix infrastructure
Continued from Page 1A
The Port experienced an
operational loss last year of
more than $1.1 million. The
loss was still an improve-
ment of more than $100,000
from the previous year and
$800,000 from two years ago.
The agency is making about
$500,000 more from oper-
ations than it was two years
ago, while spending $300,000
less on operations.
The Port previously had to
hire consultants to help sort
through financial information

but has now reached the point
of handling the accounting
reviews in-house. Jim Knight,
the Port’s executive director,
credited Finance Director Will
Isom with professionalizing
the Port’s financial accounting.
Although the agency doesn’t
have enough money, the public
should be confident in its abil-
ity to properly handle for what
it has, he said.
But while the Port has
enough money to cover day-
to-day operations, the chal-
lenge is finding money to fix
its crumbling, aging infra-
structure, he said. The agency
has divested itself of some
money-losing properties and
recently began looking at new
fees for seafood and passing
ships to raise more revenues.
“It would be easy for us
to show a profit here from
the staff level,” Knight said.
“All we have to do is not
spend money on maintenance.
That’s the exact problem that’s
taken place, and why we’re in
the shape that we are today,
because of decades of not put-
ting money into taking care of
the Port’s infrastructure.”
