Altruda brings a sev- en-piece band to the stage for a special night that pays tribute to The Skatalites, the legendary Jamaican ska band born of the 1960s and the precursor to reggae. Dance space will be provided. KALA is at 1017 Marine Drive in Astoria. Manzanita Writers Series turns 10 MANZANITA — The Manzani- ta Writers’ Series celebrates 10 years of programming in 2018. At 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Hoffman Center for the Arts, we will host a special evening celebrating writers who have published something since the series started in 2008. That could be a short story or article in a literary magazine, a piece in the Word & Image book, or your own book, whether self-published or published by a small or large publishing house. We’ll have readings about favorite memories and the impact the Writers Series and spin-off writing opportunities have had. Writers are invited to sub- mit 900 words on the topic to vwildauer@gmail.com. Nine pieces will be selected for the evening’s reading and will be published on the Hoffman website. The Hoffman Center is at 594 Laneda Ave. Chamber orchestra opens concert season The North Coast Cham- ber Orchestra launches its 2018-19 concert season in November with two performances of classical favorites titled “Souvenirs of Summer.” Concerts will be held 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Clat- sop Community College’s Performing Arts Center, 588 16th St. in Astoria, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, 36335 U.S. High- way 101 in Nehalem. The orchestra, conducted by Cory Pederson, is an en- semble of musicians offering live classical music in an intimate concert setting. Admission for the con- certs is $10 for adults, $5 stu- dents, free for children under 12 (with adult supervision). The orchestra is seek- ing string players (violin, viola, cello and bass) as well as brass, woodwind and percussion players.
