City councilor defeats Taylor, Miller

A
storia City Councilor Bruce
Jones will be the city’s next
mayor.
The deputy director of
the Columbia River Maritime Museum
and former Coast Guard commander on
Tuesday earned 58.6 percent of the vote
to surpass Dulcye Taylor, president of
the Astoria Downtown Historic District
Association, and community activist
Michael “Sasha” Miller.
“I am humbled,” Jones said, stepping
out of the noise in the Bridge & Tunnel
Bottleshop & Taproom after the election
results were announced. “I’m shocked
frankly and humbled and very grateful
for all the support I received.”
Jones will replace Arline LaMear as
mayor in January.
LaMear, elected in 2014, was Asto-
ria’s second female mayor. She followed
the 24-year tenure of former Mayor Wil-
lis Van Dusen. LaMear announced ear-
lier this year that she would not seek
re-election.

Warrenton school bonds

A $70 million school
improvement bond in Asto-
ria and a $38.5 million school
relocation bond in Warrenton
won voter endorsements on
Tuesday night.
The Astoria School Dis-
trict’s bond will finance a five-
year school improvement plan
focused on school security,
modernizing learning areas and
improving building systems.

Voters on Tuesday approved
a $20 million bond to relo-
cate the overcrowded Clatsop
County Jail in Astoria to an
expanded facility in Warrenton.

sures, in 2002 and 2012, had

failed, but law enforcement saw
a rare opportunity to upgrade
when the state closed the North
Coast Youth Correctional Facil-
ity last year.
“Oh, hell yes,” Clatsop
County Sheriff Tom Bergin
said when asked if he had seen
the election results moments
after they were released. The
bond passed with 55.4 percent
of the vote.
“I’m very grateful to the
people of Clatsop County for
realizing this is an absolute
necessity for the integrity of the
county,” he said.
DLR Group, a Port-
land-based architecture firm,
was hired to conduct a $51,000
feasibility study on converting
the former youth facility. The
