NETARTS BAY — Friends
of Netarts Bay Watershed,
Estuary, Beach and Sea
(WEBS) invite you to get
lost in the history of Netarts
Bay this November.
Netarts is an area with
many secrets to reveal.
• 10 a.m. to noon Sat-
urday, Nov. 3: “Stories of
Netarts Past”
Dive into tales of early
settler activities, includ-
ing stories about the Lost
Netarts Gold Mine, how
Netarts got its name, the Til-
lamook Indian War, Netarts’
role in building the Morning
Star and Netarts’ first murder
victim. New this year is a
slide show on the growth of
the Netarts-Oceanside area.
• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 11: “History
Between the Capes”
Park Ranger Travis
Korbe, of the Cape Lookout
Management Unit of Oregon
State Parks, will provide
an overview of the history
from Cape Lookout to Cape
Meares. Korbe will offer
a private tour of the Cape
Meares Lighthouse after the
talk.

cheese whiz Marc Bates
CANNON BEACH — Marc
Bates, aka “The Cheese Guy”
who worked in the world
of cheese for more than 40
years, brings his expertise to
Tolovana Hall for an evening
of cheese tasting and appreci-
ation 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.
He will outline the pillars,
such as soft cheeses (like
ricotta), soft ripened cheese
(chevre), bloomy rinds
(Brie and Camembert), hard
cheeses (Swiss and Gouda)
and more.
And, of course, he’ll pro-
vide tastes.
Along the way, he’ll out-
line ingredients, processes and
the basics of cheesemaking.
The event is produced in
partnership with the Tolovana
Arts Colony. Tickets are $15
— cheese is included.

Learn about Arch Cape Forest
ARCH CAPE — Free
presentations on the Arch
Cape Forest take place 11
a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at
the Arch Cape Fire Station,
79279 U.S. Highway 101.
Refreshments will be
provided.
The Arch Cape Domes-
tic Water Supply District
has applied for a Federal
Forest Legacy grant to as-
sist in the acquisition of the
forest land that forms the
backdrop of Arch Cape and
supplies the community’s
drinking water.
North Coast Land Con-
servancy is simultaneously
working to acquire an
adjacent parcel, including
Onion Peak, as part of the
“Rainforest Reserve.” All
partners are collaborating
to protect these coastal
headlands.
On Saturday, there will
be presentations by Mary
Olson, Arch Cape Forest’s
outreach coordinator, and
Shreejita Basu, of Sustain-
able Northwest. Geologist
Tom Horning will also give
a presentation titled “The
Geology of Arch Cape and
Angora Peak.”
Presentations are expect-
ed to last until 12:30 p.m.,
with time for questions
afterward.
