ADAIR VILLAGE —
There were no miracle come-
backs in this one, as the sea-
son came to a close for the
Warrenton volleyball team
Saturday afternoon at San-
tiam Christian.
Despite coming in on
a hot streak, the Warriors
couldn’t keep up with the No.
2-ranked Eagles, who scored
a sweep, 25-18, 25-12, 25-15.

The Daily Astorian
n their first three
offensive
posses-
sions of the game, the
Baker Bulldogs had
no first downs, no points and
23 yards of offense.
Astoria’s first three offen-
sive series resulted in 11 first
downs, 10 points and 202
yards in total offense.
That’s why it didn’t make
much sense two hours later,
when the No. 20-ranked Bull-
dogs stood in front of their
fans at CMH Field, celebrat-
ing a 17-10 upset win over
No. 12-ranked Astoria in a 4A
play-in football game.
The Bulldogs advance to
the Sweet 16 (Baker will play
at Banks). The season comes
to a close for the Fishermen,
4-5 overall.
The final statistics cer-
tainly supported Astoria,
which finished with 15 first
downs and 271 yards in total
offense, to six first downs and
231 yards for Baker.
Astoria built its 10-0 lead
in the second quarter with a
21-yard field goal by Tay-
lor Palmberg and an 18-yard
touchdown pass from Bo Wil-
liams to Josh Olson.
But the Bulldogs took
advantage of four Astoria
turnovers, including two in
the final minute of the first
half to completely turn the
momentum.
Baker converted an inter-
ception into a 30-yard field
goal by Mahonri Rushton
with 52 seconds left in the
half, and the Fishermen fum-
bled the ensuing kickoff, set-
ting up the Bulldogs for a
one-play drive, sophomore
quarterback Gabe Gamble-
ton throwing to Riley Flana-
gan for a 22-yard score with
39 seconds remaining.
Gambleton completed just
three passes in the game, but
two went for touchdowns.
Flanagan caught all three
passes, for 111 yards.
On the very first play of
the fourth quarter, Gamble-
ton threw a screen pass to Fla-
nagan, who broke loose and
sprinted down the sideline for
an 86-yard score.
The next Fishermen pos-
session resulted in a second
interception (both by Logan
Brashler), and the Bulldog
defense came up with big
quarterback sacks on Asto-
ria’s final two offensive
series.

on 21 carries, while senior
Ian Hunt had five receptions
for 46 yards. Dylan Junes
had an interception for the
Fishermen.
Warrenton
clinches playoff
spot with win
CLOVERDALE — With a
win Friday night at Nestucca,
the 2018 Warrenton football
team checked off three more
season milestones.
The Warriors’ easy 54-6
victory over the Bobcats was
Warrenton’s first road win of
the season. It was also the first
win over a team with a win-
ning record, and clinched a
spot in the state playoffs for
the first time since 2012.
The Warriors accom-
plished all three Friday night,
as Warrenton won its first
road game since Sept. 22 of
last year (also at Nestucca).
The win was the first in years
over a team with a winning
record, and now the Class 3A
Warriors are hoping to make
a big run in the 2A state
playoffs.
Warrenton will play a
first-round game Friday at
Sheridan.
Going into the state play-
offs, the favorites appear to
be Monroe, Sheridan and
Knappa, but No. 13-ranked
Warrenton could be the lucky
darkhorse, having won three
of its last four games, the last
two by a combined 116-12.
The Warriors had Friday’s
game locked up just minutes
into the first quarter. Devin
Jackson’s 14-yard touch-
down run gave Warrenton a
14-0 lead, and Jacob Morrow
added two scoring runs for a
28-0 lead after one quarter.
The Warriors rolled up
422 yards in total offense
(335 on the ground) against
the Bobcats, who were out-
scored 104-20 in consecutive
games against Knappa and
Warrenton.
Kenz Ramsey was 7-for-7
on point-after kicks, and
added a 23-yard field goal in
the second quarter.
Loggers roll in
tune-up for state
playoffs, 74-0
PORTLAND — After
another Friday night blow-
out victory (74-0 at Port-
land Christian), the Knappa
Loggers can finally focus on
their next goal: Winning a
state championship.
As the No. 4-ranked team
in the state, the Loggers will
be one of the main candidates
on a short list of teams look-
ing to win the 2A state title.
The Loggers will host a
first-round game Friday (7
p.m., CMH Field) vs. Glide,
which has lost three in a row.
Knappa was scoring at
will against another North-
west League opponent Friday.
The Loggers’ six league vic-
tories have come by an aver-
age score of 58 to 15.
Eli Takalo had a pair of
39-yard touchdown runs in
the first quarter, a 54-yarder
in the second period for a
52-0 halftime lead, and his
final scoring run in the third
quarter gave Knappa a 66-0
lead.
The Royals had six turn-
overs, while the Loggers fin-
ished with 18 first downs to
Portland Christian’s three.
Willapa defeats
Ilwaco, 42-0
MENLO, Wash. — Wil-
lapa Valley’s Max Smith
returned the opening kick-
off 60 yards for a touch-
down, setting the tone for a
42-0 Viking win Friday over
visiting Ilwaco, in a Pacific
2B League regular season
finale.
The Fishermen finish third
in the league standings at 4-2
in league, 5-3 overall. Ilwaco
plays a crossover game Fri-
day. Willapa Valley clinched
the league title with a 6-0
league record, 7-2 overall.
Ilwaco’s Alex Kaino
caught five passes for 65
yards.
ace serve from Ruby Dyer,
but Santiam Christian coun-
tered with a 9-3 run.
Santiam Christian outside
hitters Kassie Staton (5-foot-
10) and Emily Bourne (six-
foot) were the hot hitters in
Game 2, helping the Eagles to
leads of 8-1, 12-4 and 22-10.
The Warriors were down
6-1 in Game 3 — the per-
fect spot for a Warrenton
comeback. And the War-
riors did just that, with a kill
from Avyree Miethe tying the
game at 8-8.
But just like that, the
comeback was off, as San-
tiam Christian answered with
five straight points, then did
just enough to hold off the
Warriors, using cross-court
kills by Staton and another
spike down the line from
Josie Risinger to close out the
match.
