3B THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2018 Astoria students take steps to reduce underage drinking Fundraiser brings in more than $10,000 for ASOC The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — On Oct. 20, the Warrenton Police Department assisted Asto- ria High School senior Tay- lor Palmrose in placing 1,000 “Bottle Tags” on alcoholic beverages in Warrenton busi- nesses, including Main Street Market, Warrenton Mini Mart, Super Mart (Warrenton and Hammond), Fred Meyer, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Warrenton Liquor Store & Cigarettes and Walmart. The bright yellow tags remind adults to not purchase alcohol for minors, which is illegal. Warrenton Police Chief Matthew Workman was approached by Jill Quacken- bush from the Clatsop County Juvenile Department, and told about Palmrose’s senior project on teenage substance abuse, which included bot- tle-tagging. The Warrenton Police Department happened to have 1,000 bottle tags left from previous bottle-tagging events. Palmrose’s project also involved data collection for the Judith Niland Warrenton Police Department Participants in a recent bottle-tagging event for Taylor Palmrose’s senior project included, from left, Warrenton Police Chief Matthew Workman, Lily Randall, Jennifer Tra- vers, Palmrose, Annalyse Steele and Jenna Barendse. Not pictured: Mazie Moyer and Jill Quackenbush. Juvenile Department, which she accomplished though “world café” style listening sessions with other students. She was joined by fellow AHS students Jenna Barendse, Mazie Moyer, Lily Randall, Annalyse Steele and Jennifer Travers. For information on the efforts to reduce underage drinking in Clatsop County, and on all types of substance abuse prevention, go to “North Coast Prevention Works” on Facebook. To volunteer and be a part of the coalition, meetings are at 3:30 p.m. the third Thurs- day of every month in the War- renton City Hall Commission Chamber. The recent Astor Street Opry Company “Be an Angel” fundraiser auction was a huge success, raising over $10,000 for its general fund, thanks to more than 70 donations from local businesses, friends and generous gifts from Willis Van Dusen and Samuel S. Johnson Foundation. The event included food by Fulio’s and Table 360, plus guest state Sen. Betsy Johnson, pictured left, came on stage to play “I’ve Got A Secret.” The ASOC Board was given a surprise when state Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, pictured right, signed in to play with her own secret.
