Astoria Interim Fire Chief Richard Curtis
has spent most of his life fighting fires.
He got his start as a teenage volunteer
firefighter in Hoodland, Oregon. He went on
to serve in Bonney Lake and retired this
summer after more than 20 years with the
Anacortes Fire Department in Washington
state. Curtis will serve as Astoria’s temporary
fire chief until a permanent replacement can
be found. Former Astoria Fire Chief Ted Ames
retired earlier this year.
Curtis says his goal is to be a “stabilizing
force.” He says he looks forward to working
with the Astoria Fire Department, adding that
the department’s reputation and great staff
were a big selling point.
