An Astoria woman was
arrested Wednesday after a
short police chase.
An officer attempted to
stop the woman, who was
driving north on Seventh
struck a parked car during
the chase, causing minor
damage.
Tiffany Jane Richardson,
32, was arrested and charged
with eluding, driving under
the influence of intoxicants,
hit-and-run and reckless
driving.

Utah man arrested after
threatening standoff with police

A Utah man was arrested
Wednesday after threatening a
knife standoff with police.
A Port of Astoria officer
called police at 10:45 p.m.
about a man who was wanted
on a warrant but said an arrest
attempt would end in a stand-
off. Astoria police made con-
tact with the man at West
Marine Drive and Bay Street.
When asked to stop,
Michael Douglas Hathaway,
37, allegedly refused and
was concealing a dirk-style
knife, which officers asked
him repeatedly to drop. He
allegedly took the knife out
at one point and told officers
they would have to shoot him
to take him into custody.
After a few minutes of
talking to police, Hathaway
agreed to drop the knife and
surrender. He was taken to
Columbia Memorial Hospi-
tal in Astoria after allegedly
telling police he had ingested
heroin.
Hathaway was later taken
to Clatsop County Jail and
charged with unlawful use
of a weapon, carrying a con-
cealed weapon and felon in
possession of a restricted
weapon.

Astoria this week are canceled
due to repairs.
Part of the Hawaiian Chief-
tain’s rig became unstable,
said Zachary Stocks, pro-
gram development officer with
Grays Harbor Historical Sea-
port, the nonprofit that main-
tains both the Hawaiian Chief-
tain and a larger ship, the Lady
Washington.
“Rather than try to sail with
it, we determined the safety
risk was too great,” Stocks
said.
The ship could be out of
the water for repairs for the
next two weeks. The nonprofit
plans to postpone a scheduled
trip to California and instead
offer sails and tours in Asto-
ria when repairs are com-
plete. The last time the group
had to cancel a sail was due to
weather, Stocks said.
The Hawaiian Chieftain
was slated to offer educational
programs, boat tours and sails
in Astoria beginning Tues-
day and running through Sun-
day. The Lady Washington is
docked in Coos Bay this week.
“The only thing I can say
is these are unexpected chal-
lenges,” Stocks said. “In the
long term, we’re hoping to
make it up to folks here in
Astoria.”
