CBS chief Moonves resigns for alleged sex abuse
By DAVID BAUDER
Associated Press
NEW YORK — Sizing up
a future of a network with-
out its kingmaker, Wall Street
sent shares of CBS down
sharply today, the first day of
trading since the departure of
Les Moonves.
CBS said late Sunday, as
more allegations of sexual
abuse surfaced, that Moonves
would be replaced and that
the company was shaking up
its board of directors.
The #MeToo movement
fighting sexual misconduct
had already claimed one
of Hollywood’s top movie
moguls in Harvey Weinstein.
Now it has done the same for
Moonves, one of the televi-
sion industry’s most powerful
executives.
The New Yorker maga-
zine posted a story Sunday
with a second round of ugly
accusations against Moonves.
A total of 12 women have
alleged mistreatment, includ-
ing forced oral sex, grop-
ing and retaliation if they
resisted him. Moonves denied
the charges in a pair of state-
ments, although he said he
had consensual relations with
three of the women.
CBS said $20 million
will be donated to one or
more organizations that sup-
port #MeToo and workplace
equality for women. That sum
will be deducted from any
severance due Moonves, a fig-
ure that won’t be determined
until an outside investigation,
led by a pair of high-profile
law firms, is completed.
The network’s chief oper-
ating officer, Joseph Ianniello,
is taking over as president and
CEO until the reshaped board
of directors can find a perma-
nent replacement, CBS said.
It has been nearly a year
since Pulitzer Prize-winning
articles by The New York
Times and the New Yorker
exposed a pattern of miscon-
duct by Weinstein, who now
faces sex crime charges in
New York. Matt Lauer, Char-
lie Rose and Kevin Spacey
are among other figures
who lost jobs after men and
women came forward with
their own stories, often on
social media with the hashtag
MeToo, about sexually inap-
propriate behavior by power-
ful men.

unnamed and anonymous sources. Many have
already come forward to say the quotes by them,
like the book, are fiction. Dems can’t stand los-
ing. I’ll write the real book!”
Trump also insisted that the White House is
a “smooth running machine.” That’s counter to
accounts in Woodward’s book and in an anon-
ymous op-ed in The New York Times from a
senior administration official of a Trump White
House mired in dysfunction, with aides dispar-
aging the Republican president and working to
prevent him from making disastrous decisions.

Trump administration
plans to shutter
Palestinian office
WASHINGTON — The U.S. plans to close
the Palestine Liberation Organization office in
Washington in its latest show of support for the
U.S-Israel relationship, according to three U.S.
officials.
National Security Adviser John Bolton was
expected to address the decision in a speech
later today.
“When the Palestinians refuse to take steps
to start direct and meaningful negotiations with
Israel,” President Donald Trump’s administra-
tion will no longer keep the office open, Bolton
planned to say, according to prepared remarks.
The Trump administration notified the Pal-
estinians last year it will shutter their office in
Washington unless they enter serious peace
talks with Israel.
Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said the
move “is yet another affirmation of the Trump
administration’s policy to collectively pun-
ish the Palestinian people, including by cut-
ting financial support for humanitarian services
including health and education.”
The Palestine Liberation Organization, com-
monly known as the PLO, formally represents
all Palestinians. Although the U.S. does not
recognize Palestinian statehood, the PLO has
maintained in Washington a general delegation
office that facilitates Palestinian officials’ inter-
actions with the U.S. government.
The head of the PLO delegation to the U.S.
accused the Trump administration of “disman-
tling decades of U.S. vision and engagement in
Palestine.”
“Weaponizing humanitarian and devel-
opmental aid as political blackmail does not
work,” Ambassador Husam Zomlot said.
Although the Israelis and Palestinians are
not engaged in active, direct negotiations,
Trump’s administration has been working to
mediate a peace deal that would end the Israe-
li-Palestinian conflict. Led by Jared Kushner,
Trump’s son-in-law and a senior aide, White
House officials have been preparing a peace
proposal they intend to put forward at an
unspecified time.

Hurricane Florence is seen from the International Space Station.
Carolinas brace for extremely
dangerous Hurricane Florence
RALEIGH, N.C. — Florence rapidly strengthened into a major hurricane today and all
signs suggested it will reach Category 4 strength as it closes in on North and South Carolina,
where forecasters said unusually warm ocean currents off the coast could super-charge it into
“a large and extremely dangerous hurricane.”
The first impacts were already being seen on North Carolina’s barrier islands today as dan-
gerous rip currents and seawater flowed over the state highway. People were told to prepare to
evacuate communities up and down a stretch of coastline already identified as particularly vul-
nerable to rising sea levels due to climate change.
For many, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge: If Florence slows to a crawl just
off the coast, it could carry torrential rains up into the Appalachian mountains, causing flash
floods, mudslides and other dangerous weather across a wide area.
A warm ocean is the fuel that powers hurricanes, and Florence will be moving over waters
where temperatures are peaking near 85 degrees. And with little wind shear to pull the storm
apart, Florence’s hurricane wind field was expected to expand over the coming days, increas-
ing its storm surge and inland wind threats, and raising the likelihood of life-threatening fresh-
water flooding.
The governors of North and South Carolina and Virginia declared states of emergency far
ahead of the approaching storm. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster also suspended his
campaign and asked President Donald Trump for a federal emergency declaration.
Navy ships off Virginia’s coast were preparing to sail out of the path, a North Carolina uni-
versity has already canceled classes and people have begun stocking up on plywood, bottled
water and other supplies.
President Donald Trump attributed to them in
his new book, “Fear.”
Kelly is quoted calling Trump “an idiot,” and
Mattis is quoted saying Trump has the under-
standing of “a fifth or sixth-grader,” but they’ve
said they didn’t make those statements.
Woodward, asked this morning on NBC’s
“Today” show about their denials, said, “They
are not telling the truth ... these are political
statements to protect their jobs.”
The Pulitzer Prize-winning Woodward
staunchly defended the integrity of his reporting
and said the book, which comes out this week,
“is as carefully done as you can do an excava-
tion of the reality of what goes on.”
Trump has called the book “fiction.” Since
excerpts were released last week, the president
has accused Woodward of making up quotes
attributed to him and others.
Today, Trump tweeted that “the Woodward
book is a Joke - just another assault against me,
in a barrage of assaults, using now disproven

WASHINGTON — Federal prosecutors are
backtracking on their allegation that a Russian
woman accused of working as a secret agent
offered to trade sex for access, according to a
Justice Department court filing.
Prosecutors had earlier accused Maria
Butina, a gun rights activist in U.S. custody on
charges she worked as a covert agent and tried to
establish back-channel lines of communication
to the Kremlin, of offering to exchange sex for
a position with a special interest organization.
The salacious allegation, which immediately
escalated the public interest in the case, was
based on a series of text messages to and from
Butina and other information that prosecutors
say they had obtained.
But in a new court filing late Friday, pros-
ecutors said they misinterpreted the messages.
They said “even granting that the government’s
understanding of this particular text conversa-
tion was mistaken,” there is other evidence to
support keeping Butina in custody as the case
against her moves forward in Washington.
Butina, 29, was arrested in July and accused
of gathering intelligence on American officials
and political organizations. Prosecutors say she
used her contacts with the National Rifle Asso-
ciation and the National Prayer Breakfast to
develop relationships with U.S. politicians and
gather information for Russia. They also say she
used her role as a student at American Univer-
sity in Washington as a cover for her activities.
The case is being handled by the U.S. attor-
ney for the District of Columbia and not by spe-
cial counsel Robert Mueller, who has been lead-
ing an investigation into possible coordination
between Russia and Donald Trump’s Republi-
can presidential campaign as well as Russian
interference in the 2016 U.S. election. The fil-
ing came ahead of a status hearing in her case
scheduled for today.
Butina’s lawyer, Robert Driscoll, had
strongly denied the accusation and said the gov-
ernment had relied on an “innocuous” 3-year-
old text message exchange between Butina and
a longtime friend, assistant and public relations
professional for a gun rights group that she had
founded.
