An in-depth boating safety class is offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 62, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Timberland Library, 151 First Ave N., Ilwaco, Wash. Arrive at 8:15 a.m. for registration. The class meets the requirements for the mandatory Washington and Oregon Boater Education Card upon successful completion. The cost is $10 and includes class manual and handouts. Topics include safe boating laws, personal watercraft requirements, navigation rules and navigating rivers, avoiding collisions and accidents, and other boating emergencies and boating tips. Information on cold water survival is includ- ed. The class format includes videos, discussion and free resources on boating safety. Qualified instructors teach the class in a positive, relaxed and informative classroom environment. You can also make arrangements with Auxil- iarists to conduct courtesy vessel examinations. Bid, enter drawing for Fall Festival prizes CANNON BEACH — The Fall Festival — an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit, volunteer-staffed Cannon Beach Library — takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Cannon Beach Library, 131 N. Hemlock St. Festival attendees have a chance to buy holiday pres- ents, handmade crafts and homemade bakery goods. In addition, from now until 4 p.m. on the festival date, library visitors can bid on donated hotel stays and enter drawings for gift certificates from many Can- non Beach shops and eating establishments. Bids can be placed and tickets for the drawings can be purchased at the library until 4 p.m., Sept. 29. Winners need not be present to win. The handcrafted items and homemade bakery goods — which sell out early! — will be available at the festival. Bids are for each of five Cannon Beach hotel stays ranging in value from $385 to $638. Gift certificates for restaurants, art galleries, brew pubs, coffee shops, clothing stores and other shops are bundled into six groups. Each bundle of gift certificates, valued at $270 to $295, will be awarded through a drawing held the day of the festival. Drawing tickets are $1 for one ticket, $5 for six tickets and $20 for 25 tickets. Get ready, North Coast! ASTORIA — If a natural disaster hits our area, North- west Natural wants you and your family to be prepared. Join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Astoria Armory, 1636 Ex- change St., for an event that will help you get ready. The company will be joined by the American Red Cross and other emergency preparedness groups to give away safety items and infor- mation, plus a free lunch. The first 100 families will also receive a free small preparedness kit.
