Knappa defeats Grant Union, 26-6
The Daily Astorian
KNAPPA — The Knappa foot-
ball team lost a lot through gradua-
tion, but it’s “next man up” time for
the Loggers, who scored an impres-
sive 26-6 win over Grant Union
in a season opener Friday night at
Knappa.
In his first start as a varsity quar-
terback, junior Eli Takalo threw
three touchdown passes in the first
half and ran for another in the fourth
quarter to lead the Loggers.
Takalo had a 15-yard TD toss to
Kanai Phillip to open the scoring in
the second quarter, then added a pair
of 11-yard scoring passes to Devin
Hoover and Kayden Stuhr for a 20-0
halftime lead.
He scored on a 40-yard run mid-
way through the second half, before
the Prospectors scored a late touch-
down to avoid the shutout.
“We tried a few different things,
Krissy Barendse-Goodman/For The Daily Astorian
Knappa quarterback Eli Takalo threw three first half touchdown passes
Friday, and ran for a fourth in the second half.
and looked pretty good — I was
really proud of the kids,” said
Knappa coach Aaron Barendse.
“(The Bulldogs) pretty much dom-
inated the line in the third quarter.
We only had three rushing attempts
that quarter.”
But the Loggers did what they do
best, and kept Grant Union out of
the end zone.
“We won the turnover battle
(recovered four fumbles), and our
defense played a great game,” Bar-
endse said. “I know our kids are ath-
letic and what they can do — it was
just great to see them out there fly-
ing around, making plays and being
scrappy.
“For the last few years, these
kids have been playing behind some
great athletes, and it was great to
see the whole group stepping up and
showing some great leadership.”
As a team, Knappa rushed 26
times for 129 yards, with Luke Goo-
zee carrying 13 times and scoring on
a two-point conversion.
Defensively, Jaxson Goodman
recovered three fumbles and Ryson
Patterson recovered a fourth.
The Loggers play Friday at
Toledo, which scored a 29-18 win
over Nestucca.
PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Seaside scores payback in win over Henley
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
S
EASIDE — There will be lots
more goals to accomplish and
games to win, but for one night
only in late August, revenge was
sweet for the Seaside Gulls.
Facing the same team that ended
their hopes and dreams in 2017,
the Gulls opened 2018 with a win
over the Henley Hornets, 55-13,
to avenge that loss and spark what
they hope will be a state champion-
ship season.
Seaside’s win over the Hornets
at Broadway Field will raise some
eyes at the 4A level, as the Gulls
overcame a couple of early turn-
overs and thoroughly dominated a
team that finished 2017 in the state
quarterfinals.
Ranked seventh in a presea-
son coaches poll, Seaside put up 55
points against a team that had not
given up that much since 2012.
Seaside senior Alexander Teub-
ner ran over and around the Hor-
nets, racking up 119 yards in the
first half alone. He got stronger as
the game progressed, and added 102
yards on just eight carries in the sec-
ond half to finish with 221 yards on
22 totes.
More importantly, Teubner was
in the end zone six times, scoring on
runs of 47 and 49 yards. He also had
an interception on defense.
Seaside quarterback Payton
Westerholm was only 3-of-10 pass-
ing, but he averaged 23 yards per
completion, and kept the chains
moving when he had to.
The Gulls racked up 443 yards
in total offense, 374 on the ground.
But the first score came through
the air, as Westerholm opened the
scoring with 9:45 left in the first
quarter, tossing an 11-yard touch-
down pass to Chris Avery.
The next six touchdowns
belonged to Teubner, whose 47-yard
scoring jaunt with six seconds left in
the first half basically put the game
away.
After giving up an 82-yard scor-
ing drive to start the game, Seaside’s
defense allowed just three first
downs over the second and third
quarters. The Hornets were just
3-for-13 on third down conversions.
After scoring on its opening drive,
Henley could only manage two field
goals from Brian Baker (26 and 34
yards) the remainder of the game.
Seaside’s Gio Ramirez added
61 yards rushing, which included a
48-yard run late in the third quarter
to set up a 1-yard blast by Teubner.
The Gulls’ second-string offense
even put together an eight-play,
57-yard drive late in the fourth quar-
ter, with Jake Black scoring from a
yard out, and Aedyn Cook adding
the two-point conversion.
The Gulls head south later this
week, for a nonleague game Friday
at Marist.

poose, where the Indians built a big
first half lead on their way to a 27-0
win over the Fishermen.
In a lengthy, penalty-filled open-
ing night, Scappoose managed to
shut down the Fishermen offense to
score its first shutout over Astoria in
over 20 years.
Scappoose senior Connor
McNabb opened the scoring with an
82-yard punt return in the first quar-
ter, then scored on a 5-yard run on
the first play of the second period.
A 15-yard TD run by Matt Roth
gave the Indians a 21-0 lead at the
break, and quarterback Jakobi Kessi
capped the scoring with a 6-yard
sprint in the third quarter.
The Astoria offense made sev-
eral trips into the red zone, but came
up empty. The Fishermen return to
play Stayton in the home opener
Friday at CMH Field.
Yamhill-Carlton
tops Warrenton
YAMHILL — In Warrenton’s
first football game as a 2A team, the
Warriors played a 3A school that
formerly played at the 4A level.
And the Yamhill-Carlton Tigers
made Warrenton’s 2A debut a rough
one, as the Tigers scored a 42-13
win over the visiting Warriors.
Yamhill senior Owen Amerson
had a big night for the Tigers, rush-
ing for 152 yards and three touch-
downs on 17 carries.
Amerson had scoring runs of 31
and 19 yards in the second quar-
ter, as Yamhill built a 28-6 halftime
lead.
He added a 49-yard TD run in
the third period.
Warrenton scored touchdowns

14-yard pass from Jacob Morrow)
and the fourth quarter (Morrow on a
41-yard pass to Austin Little).
Devin Jackson highlighted the
night for the Warriors with 161
yards rushing on 21 carries, and 13
tackles on defense.
Yamhill had 413 yards in total
offense, 289 rushing.
Warrenton will play Creswell
in the Warriors’ home opener
Friday.
VERNONIA — Vernonia out-
gained Ilwaco in total offense,
but the Fishermen scored on a
couple of special teams plays,
and Ilwaco quarterback Ethan Per-
sonius accounted for 15 points in
a 23-12 win over the Loggers in a
cross-state battle to open the 2018
season.
Ilwaco’s first two points came
when the Loggers snapped the ball
out of their own end zone on a punt
attempt, and two minutes later, Per-
sonius tossed a 23-yard touchdown
pass to Alex Kaino for a 9-0 lead.
In the opening minute of the sec-
ond quarter, Ilwaco blocked a punt
and Ethan Duffy returned it 23
yards for a score.
The Fishermen scored their final
touchdown with 43 seconds left
in the first half, a 53-yard Person-
ius-to-Jeb Sheldon pass play. Per-
sonius was 6-for-9 passing for 96
yards, and was 3-for-3 on point-af-
ter kicks.
