Estacada
holds off
Astoria
in four
games
PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP
ESTACADA — Astoria ral-
lied for a win in Game 2, but lost
the other three games Thursday
night at Estacada, where the Rang-
ers defeated the Fishermen in four
games, 25-17, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18.
“We competed all night,” said
Astoria coach Jessie Todd. “We
got down in Game 1, but we didn’t
stay down. We showed some con-
fidence and came from behind to
win Game 2.”
Despite losing Games 3 and 4,
Todd said, “I thought we played
better defensively than we did
Tuesday (in a home win over Cat-
lin Gabel). Overall, I was pleased
with how we played.”
Julia Norris and Kes Sandstrom
led Astoria with seven kills apiece,
and Halle Helmersen had four ace
serves. Hailey O’Brien finished
with a team-high 24 digs, with
Emilli Delong adding 17.
Astoria has a week off before
playing at Rainier next Thursday.

Astoria girls dominate
short-handed Rainier

W
ARRENTON — The Rainier
Columbians were out-battled, out-
scored and outnumbered Thursday
night at the Warrenton soccer complex.
The Astoria girls soccer team ran circles
around the Columbians and took target prac-
tice on the Rainier net.
And the Lady Fishermen ultimately walked
off Volunteer Field with a 3-1 victory, mak-
ing it the second straight season with a sea-
son-opening win over the Columbians.
Rainier showed some character by just
showing up, as the Columbians had just 10
players in uniform.
Astoria’s 11 starters and multiple substitu-
tions took advantage of its good fortune, dom-
inating time of possession and shots on goal.
The only thing that held Astoria back was
numerous offsides penalties, which wiped
out more than a few fast breaks for the Lady
Fishermen.
It took just over 30 minutes for Astoria to
score the first goal, as Taleigh Cole dropped
a short pass to sophomore Hayley Kelly,
whose shot attempt from the right post slipped
through the hands of the Rainier goalkeeper.
The Fishermen had 12 shots on goal and
five corner kick opportunities in the first half,
which ended in a 1-0 Astoria lead.
Rainier actually had two of the best chances
of the half, when a missed clear by the Asto-
ria defense gave the Columbians a breakaway
opportunity, but the shot was stopped cold by
Fisherman keeper Shelby Rasmussen.
In the 21st minute, a mix-up between
defender and keeper gave Rainier another
close-range shot, which sailed wide right.
In the 51st minute of the game (11:50 into
the second half), a corner kick from Asto-
ria freshman Karen Zuniga deflected off the
keeper and into the net for a 2-0 lead.
In the 56th minute, a slow-rolling shot by
Cole somehow got past the Rainier keeper into
the lower right corner of the net.
The Columbians tacked on a late goal with
five minutes remaining, while a penalty kick
chance for Kelly sailed over the cross bar in
the final seconds of play.
Astoria held a 9-1 advantage in shots on
goal in the second half.
The Lady Fishermen have road games at
St. Helens and Newport (vs. Marshfield) next
week. Rainier hosts Seaside for a nonleague
game Tuesday.
In other nonleague girls soccer action
Thursday, Seaside and Junction City battled to
a 1-1 tie.

ria responded with two unanswered scores for
a 2-1 nonleague win over Estacada in a boys
soccer match Thursday night at Warrenton’s
Volunteer Field.
The Fishermen dominated play in their sea-
son opener, while the Rangers lost their sec-
ond game in three days, both by 2-1 scores
and both to Cowapa League teams, as Banks
defeated Estacada earlier in the week.
Still, Estacada scored just three minutes, 20
seconds into Thursday’s game, as Raymond
Garcia sent a long shot (disguised as a pass) in
from the right side. Instead of sailing wide left,
the ball found the upper left corner of the net
for a 1-0 Ranger lead.
Astoria dominated the remainder of the
first half.
Jonathan Jimenez had two shots on goal,
narrowly missing on a free kick attempt in the
18th minute.
A line drive attempt from just 10 yards
out by Riley Cameron was stopped by the
Estacada keeper, but Astoria’s Shrey Sharma
found the back of the net in the 24th minute, as
he took a centered pass from Michael Postle-
wait, turned and scored on a right-footed shot
from just inside the penalty area.
The Rangers — who had just 12 players in
uniform — managed six shots on goal in the
second half, but all were stopped or knocked
away by Astoria sophomore goalkeeper Tony
Tumbarello.
Meanwhile, the Fishermen scored the
go-ahead goal 16:55 into the second half,
when Jimenez gathered in a corner kick from
Dalton Byrd, took a step or two, lined up the
shot from just inside the penalty area, and sent
a line drive into the right side of the net for a
2-1 lead.
“The boys played very well, despite miss-
ing three starters tonight (Christian Medi-
na-Perez, Aldo Cruz and David Bermudez),”
said Astoria coach Lee Cain. “Despite being
surprised by a long shot that found the net
early in the first half, Tony Tumbarello gave a
promising performance in the goal with eight
solid saves.”
In addition, “Brooks Fromwiller was stal-
wart in the left back position, repeatedly inter-
cepting Estacada passes and starting counter
attacks.”
Astoria hosts St. Helens next Thursday at
CMH Field.
Seaside boys blank
Junction City, 5-0
JUNCTION CITY — Seaside bounced
back from Tuesday’s loss to Newport with a
solid 5-0 win at Junction City, in a nonleague
boys soccer match Thursday.
Chase Januik and Wesley Corliss each had
a goal and an assist for the Gulls, who led 3-0
at halftime. Jarret Thiesseld had 10 saves in
goal for Junction City.
